Yes those are packages of gauze, ace bandages & wound care. Our new routine for the next couple of weeks! An update on the patient! First, thanks to the amazing UNC Hospital team & Burn Unit & everyone who has reached out to check in on Vivienne. She has had easier and better weekends but during this crazy ordeal she has shown wonderful spirit and incredible strength. So on to the prognosis... We had two possible courses of care for Vivienne's burn injury. Option one was to let her stay in the hospital and have a surgical procedure on Monday in which they would do a deep clean on the burns and pack the area with a long term bandage of a pig skin wrap that would remain on for 7-10 days. This option was not the best for the area where her burns are located as it prevents easy access to clean and care for the wounds. Option two was to bring Viv home and begin a daily course of wound/burn care that would last intensively for the next 7-10 days. Viv really wanted to come home so after some training on burn/wound care we decided to bring her home and begin her course of care. The past 24 hours have been tough but food, ice cream, and visits from her Mimi, friends & neighbors definitely helped. It will be a long process of healing; the burns are of a severity that it will take around 21 days for her see full topical healing. To heal the lower dermis & hypodermis, she will have to wear special supportive bandages for up to 6 months (these will hopefully come off right before we go on our Kilimanjaro hike). Vivienne has been very engaged with her care and treatment-asking questions of the fabulous UNC Hospital Medical Team and helping treat her wounds at home. She is very independent and wants to be involved every step of the way. While we are certainly upset that she has endured such a painful injury, we could not be more proud of the maturity and bravery she has shown.
