"I have gay friends" as a justification is the same as saying "I think the way women live is an abomination and they will all go to hell. I’m not sexist though! I have friends who are women"
one of my least favorite parts out of all the things i hate about the "i have a gay friend" argument is how said person is probably treating their 'gay friend.'
it probably comes with a lot of, "you're not like other gay people!" like what does that even mean? being gay is literally just liking the same gender, has no affect on your personality or behavior aside from liking the same gender, and you are just like other gay people because you are gay. u are a gay ppl if you are gay.
I remember when I read Huckleberry Finn a while back, there was a line at the end where Huck (a white, privileged kid) is talking about Jim (a black slave) after Jim suggests they go get a doctor to help someone, saying, "I knowed he was white inside, and I reckoned he’d say what he did say..." which reminds me of the current defense "I have a gay friend."
It was ironic that Huck had said that Jim was white on the inside because white people had caused all their troubles in the book, whereas Jim had probably been the most helpful character in the book. Yet instead of seeing black people differently, Huck starts to try and see Jim as white in some way to justify the good things that Jim had done. It's still a racist view point, but it brings in that 'exception' factor, instead of viewing as a representative. Huck pretty much said, 'I knew Jim wasn't like black people.' Sounds a lot like, "you're not like other gay people."
