pictured: photos from the GOURDen Party on 9/17/2019 CLICK HERE for a short video from the GOURDen Party We love the garden house with its ceiling of greenery & gourds + the blooms all over the roof each evening, yet the dearest aspect of this project is how it creates a meeting point for people who might not have otherwise crossed paths. Steve learned of the project through a flyer posted at the library and has been a devoted gardener at Missouri GOURDen for two seasons - he's also a musician and has led musical improvisation at the GOURDen on occasion. Blessing has been helping at the garden for about a year now. She and "Uncle" Steve thoroughly enjoyed themselves playing foosball, their laughter set the mood for the GOURDen Party !

CLICK HERE for a short video showing Missouri GOURDen The “...Discovery Center will offer a Monarch Mania event from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21. This walk-in program for all ages will give visitors a chance to tag migrating monarchs. Milkweed plants will be given away and various other exhibits and activities will be offered. Also, the Missouri Prairie Foundation will offer native plant seeds and seedlings for sale. A portion of the proceeds will benefit prairie preservation and restoration in Missouri.”
Come for Monarch Mania and stop by to see Missouri GOURDen with this year’s crop of gourds up above, under the roof.
Missouri GOURDen is located at the SW corner of 48th & Troost at the edge of the Anita Gorman Discovery Center parking lot ~ Missouri GOURDen is a community garden where we’re raising gourds up and over an artistic garden house with the goal of making shekere instruments from the gourds. All are welcome to visit and join in gardening. The project is partnered with Kansas City Community Gardens and an orchard planted by the Giving Grove is just behind the GOURDen. Along with gourds, we’re raising other types of flowering vines, herbs, radishes, and a grassy plant that bears a naturally occurring bead that can be used, along with the dried gourds, for making shekeres. Missouri GOURDen is a project of the studio of Maria Ogedengbe. For more information: [email protected], (347) 687-5247, missouri-gourden.tumblr.com
