I can't even begin to express how saddening it was to leave everyone behind this summer of 2016. They made this summer one of the best experiences of my entire life and I made friends that I connected with more than I thought possible in a mere month and seeing them go hurts my heart. Any advice for coping to get out of that mindset? I miss seeing everyone and my home feels so foreign. I miss Palms, Odum, I miss our dorms, even the RAs. I just want to be back on the magic square, with my friends
The beauty of this day and age is that we have technology to help us. For me, I am actually still really good friends and in contact with some of the people I met at GHP. I know that your friends may live far from you, but you’d be surprised at how fate/chance actually lets yall meet up. Funny story, my bestest friend at GHP lived about 3 hours away from me, so I never thought I’d see her again. Never in a million years did I expect that I’d end up going to college in her hometown! I also didn’t see this coming, but another guy in my major at GHP ended up going to the same small college I go to. Since I was a math major, I ended up bumping into some of my friends at math competitions (nerdy I know). With a car it makes things easier and some of my friends from GHP ended up visiting me sometimes. Facebook is a lovely way to keep in touch as well as snapchat for me LOL. thank you technology
It’s been 3 years now and the memories of GHP will never fade away. Honestly, I think a good advice is to journal your experience at GHP if you havent done so already. That’s what I used this blog for and just writing about GHP after it was over and rereading it sometimes brings back the good days yet doesn’t make me sad that I left because i can relive it over and over again.
Another advice I think would be helpful is to channel all your experiences from GHP to help/advise next year’s GHP nominees. Giving advice to help others get to experience the same awesome program as you did really helps you feel connected, even if you’re not going again. Advising the GHPers that are accepted is also really fun. My friends and I made this huge google document on what ppl should or should not expect/do at GHP and it was really funny for us to write (and hopefully for others to read) and enjoyable to look back on our times there and bring it back to the present for others.
Lastly, don’t forget you can always apply to be a RA/counselor (I forgot the term) there! I forgot how old you have to be but most likely in college at least.
All in all, don’t be sad that it’s over, be glad that it happened! GHP is so memorable and is a once in a life time experience. The people you meet there, the knowledge you learn, the independence, everything. I’m not gonna lie, but your first year of college would probably give you almost the same feels, so you get to have a good time all over again haha. Except you’ll be so prepared for it cause you’ve been to ghp :)
