it suddenly clicked for me that the existence of Millicent and her sisters as ‘buds’ or ‘offshoots’ from Malenia may be another example of the ways plant propagation plays into the themes of Elden Ring, see of course Godrick and grafting for the most prominent example.

first I was wondering whether Millicent and her siblings were an example of the same kind of dual identity phenomenon experienced by other Empyreans, such as Miquella and St. Trina or Marika and Radagon, but the difference seems to be that Malenia’s offshoots are cultivated, manipulated into experiencing specific emotions and situations (like betrayal at the hands of their closest friend) to achieve a desired result.

with that in mind the impression I’m getting is that Malenia may have had the innate qualities required for a separate entity that’s connected to her to exist, but maybe due to the Scarlet Rot’s interference or just Gowry et al learning how to manipulate and influence the Rot, it didn’t come to pass in the normal way and instead had to be promoted via the interference of the Kindred of Rot. with Malenia lost to them and many of the Kindred rightly seeing her as having abandoned them, maybe they turned to propagating offshoots of Malenia in the hopes of finding a new object of worship?
