If you live in Jacksonville this is pretty much old news at this point but in case you live under a rock or on the other side of the planet, these two massive cooling towers (over 450ft tall and just as wide at the base) were imploded Saturday morning and I was there to film it. As to be expected it was a pretty awesome sight to see. I made sure to sneak a peek over the screen as I was flying to remember the scene in real life. The first shot is regular speed shot with a phantom 4 pro pulling back as the towers collapse revealing the growing dust cloud. Today our ride in the way back machine takes us to a canola field in Bowling Green, KY in April of 2015. It was still the early days of droning for me and I learned an important lesson this day about flying low over what turned out to be uneven terrain. When my screen went blank and I didn’t see the drone anywhere in the sky I knew it had gone down. The problem now was trying to locate the wreckage in a huge featureless field of yellow flowers. My only point of reference was a tree in the middle of the field. As I walked towards the tree I began to hear the familiar drone buzz as it intermittently was trying to power up and return home. I followed the sound and miraculously there it was. The best part of all was that the same featureless field of yellow flowers that made it almost impossible to find is actually what saved the it. Sunsets have always been great here but last nights was pretty spectacular. With storms moving in from the west we got to enjoy the cloud formations, the lighting show and the intense colors as the sun got lower in the sky. Sometimes you luck out when you're scheduled for an exterior shot first thing in the morning (in this case a drone shot) but the weather doesn't look very promising and you decide to do the 2 hour drive and hope for the best.
