I was looking for a detail in Elizabeth Lev’s biography of Caterina Sforza and just

frustrated all over again, because there’s a good book in there, but it’s not what the book is because she keeps pulling Sabatini bullshit. Like, Caterina was fabulous, and also terrifying, and sometimes curbstomped her enemies through a magnificent blend of brilliance and asskicking. And sometimes she made little mistakes that added up, like exhausting the goodwill of her subjects on multiple occasions. And sometimes Caterina herself got legitimately curbstomped—and the author is constantly like, well, it doesn’t count okay because it would have been different if things were different.

Please. It’s Renaissance Italy. Everyone fails at some point and it’s a lot more interesting if you point out where and how they failed for all the wtf awesomeness.

(I think it’d be easy to compare this to Bradford’s obvious stanning of her subjects, but ultimately she’s like, yeah Lucrezia is fab but lbr she ran out of fucks to give about other people by about 12 or the shit they pulled was amazing and also why they got overthrown. Lev is more like the political winds conspired against her!!!! or it was just this one time she had people thrown down wells and they just didn’t appreciate her)

That shitty thing when you get angry about social justice stuff and you want to tell your friends, but you feel that their reaction is not enough, because this this thing ENRAGES YOU SO MUCH, but the angrier and more irrational you get, the more they think you are too extreme and illogical and that in turn frustrates you because DON'T THEY SEE?  And then to get them to care you get even more involved and extreme and it's a vicious circle and I end up in that all the time and I hate it.
