The sheer power and resonating depth of Grace Ackerman’s voice stopped me in my tracks when I were searching for compelling new music the other day. As it took a hold of me, all I could do was sit in stunned silence and listen. The singer songwriter from Watford in South East England is more than impressive on her latest single, Blood Draw, a piano-driven ballad with sweeping crescendos and breathtaking pinnacles. Even though he’s typically a light sleeper, Levi is having a difficult time waking up this morning even though his daughter is bouncing up and down at the edge of the bed begging her parents to wake up so they can finally open gifts. When little Grace tugs at the blankets, Levi only tugs them back harder, pulling them up and over his head so that he can hide in their warmth and also muffle the sound of his daughter’s voice if only for a few more minutes. He thinks he deserves that much for staying up until his daughter had fallen asleep so he could hide “Santa’s” presents underneath the Christmas tree.

“Levi,” Petra says, laughing beside him. She prods his side with a finger, but it only makes him turn away from her. She moves in closer to him, a gentle hand on his shoulder shaking him awake. “Come on, Levi. You know Grace has been waiting for this since last night.”

“Presents, Daddy, presents!” Grace squeals, bouncing up and down on the bed once more. She wiggles her way into the bed, squishing herself in between her mother and father. Her little hand grasps onto the collar of her father’s shirt, tugging at it impatiently. “Daddy, you said we could open them this morning!”

“I did. I did say that,” Levi mumbles. He reaches behind him, waving Grace off so that she’ll stop choking him with his shirt. He slowly sits up in bed, ignoring the amused giggles from his wife at seeing him like this when he’s usually up and about by five in the morning. He rubs his face and looks tiredly over at his daughter, who doesn’t seem to notice how exhausted he is.

“Presents!” Grace says again, throwing her chubby arms up in the air when she sees that her father has finally gotten up.

“Give your dad some time to wake up first,” Petra says to her daughter. She reaches out to brush a lock of hair from Grace’s face. She sits up and pulls Grace into her lap, pressing a sweet kiss on her daughter’s forehead. “How about we sit outside and wait for Daddy first? We can eat some of the cookies that Santa didn’t eat. Do you want me to warm some milk for you?”

Grace squeals in delight, jumping off the bed and running down the stairs to the living room without waiting for her mother.

Petra laughs and looks over at Levi who is still slouched over half-asleep in their bed. She reaches out to brush his cheek with the back of her hand. “I’ll meet you downstairs,” she tells him, giving him a quick peck on the top of his head. She gets up from the bed, her absence making it a little colder, but she makes sure to straighten the sheets before she leaves, making sure that they don’t drag on the ground. As she leaves the room, she tells him, “I’ll have some tea ready for you when you come down.”

Levi only grunts in response.

He yawns, not even bothering to cover his mouth because he’s so damn tired. He had underestimated his daughter and her stubbornness. After last night’s party, he was sure that Grace would fall asleep immediately, but it seems that playing with her uncles and opening presents weren’t enough to wear her out. She still had enough energy to stay up until two in the morning to wait for Santa Claus to come, and Levi had struggled to stay awake to tuck his daughter in her own bed and then put all the presents under the tree. He should stay in bed for at least another hour – after all, she was the one who had made it so difficult for him to get up in the morning – but he’s not that cruel of a father. In the end, Levi manages to stumble out of his bed and down the stairs where his wife and daughter are waiting for him.

“Daddy, hurry!” Grace whines, getting up from where she was kneeling in front of the tree. She hurriedly walks over to where her father is and takes him by his hand, pulling him after her so he can sit next to her mother on the floor.

“Tea?” Petra asks cheerfully. She holds out a steaming mug of tea for him.

“Thanks,” Levi says groggily, taking the cup from her. He takes a long sip but regrets it immediately when he tastes the overwhelming flavor of peppermint mixed with chocolate. It’s far too rich, creamy, and festive for his taste, but Petra had insisted that they at least try it out for the holidays. He makes a face after swallowing, frowning when he hands the mug back to Petra, but she only giggles back at him.

“Daddy,” Grace says. When Levi looks up, he sees his daughter standing in front of him with a restless frown on her face. “Can we open presents now? We’ve been waiting for you forever!”

“Go ahead,” Levi yawns, waving her away.

Grace doesn’t need to be told twice. She immediately reaches for the largest box, tearing off the shiny wrapping paper and discarding it carelessly on the ground. The girl gasps when she finally sees the picture printed on the box – a pastel pink dollhouse, one that she had been begging for ever since it had come out. She squeals excitedly, opening it up to show her parents all the different rooms and the tiny, ornate furniture.

“You must have been such a good girl this year, Grace!” Petra says with a smile. She holds up her phone, holding it sideways so that she can capture a picture with Grace and her gift. “Now smile so we can send a picture to grandma and grandpa later!”

Their daughter happily sits next to her new dollhouse, hugging it and smiling for the camera even though the plastic chimney pressed against her cheek can’t be too comfortable. Still, she grins widely even as her mother counts down from three and finally takes the picture.

“Can I see?” Grace asks, getting up from where she was sitting to walk over to her mother. She taps on her mom’s shoulder, making that same pout from before as she waits for her mom to let her look on the screen.

Petra flips her phone over so that Grace can see. “Aren’t you such a beautiful girl?” Petra coos.

“She takes after her mother,” Levi says, relishing the faint blush that flushes across his wife’s cheeks. He reaches out to ruffle Grace’s hair. “Go and open the rest of Santa’s presents, Grace. Let’s see what else you got.”

“Okay!” Grace says gleefully, rushing over to her presents and picking out a bag where she pulls out a stuffed rabbit.

Levi watches as Petra snaps yet another picture of their daughter and listens as his daughter takes her time admiring the snow-white bunny, fiddling with the pink ribbon tied around one of its ears. It might have been difficult for him to get up this morning, but he’s glad he did so in the end. Even though he hates the mess of opening up presents on Christmas morning, he adores his daughter’s delighted smile too much to care.

Petra notices her husband’s gaze and she reaches out to squeeze his hand. “Merry Christmas. And happy birthday,” she says to him softly. “I do have a surprise for you…but I wasn’t able to wrap it.”

“It’s fine,” Levi assures her. He pauses for a moment to let Grace – excited this time because she had just opened a set of beautiful crayons – sit on his lap. He wraps his arms around his daughter and strokes her hair. “The two of you are more than enough for me.”

“Then would one more be too much?” Petra asks with a soft smile.

It takes Levi a moment to understand what she’s saying, but it all becomes clear when he lowers his gaze and sees that her hand rests on her belly. Her stomach is smooth and flat, but he knows that in a few months it will swell and a few months after that he’ll be able to put his hand against her belly and feel a kick from the baby inside. He’s not even sure if it’s a boy or a girl, but he’s sure it won’t matter. He’ll love them just the same.

“No,” Levi says quietly. His voice quivers, overwhelmed with emotion. He holds Grace tightly, hugging her close as he turns to his wife with a soft smile. “One more would be perfect.”

Daddy’s Little Girl

“You’ll have to be quieter or we’ll wake up Petra,” Eld warns, but he smiles at the little girl who giggles as Eren lifts her up and twirls her around and around.

“Sorry,” Eren says with a sheepish grin. He sets down the girl and motions her over to Auruo, who is sitting over in the corner trying his best to ignore her. His attempts are futile though because as soon as the child begins to toddle over to him, his grumpy expression melts away into a smile and he opens his arms to lift her up and set her in his lap. Looking over at Auruo, Eren asks, “Petra and the Captain make cute babies, huh?”

“Grace is adorable,” Gunter agrees with a soft smile, observing the girl as she motions for Auruo to braid her hair the way her mother does. “She’s the spitting image of her mother.”

The young girl does look an awful lot like Petra, although her hair is more golden in color. Petra says her hair will darken into a darker ginger color as she grows older. Like her mother, the girl has such sweet expressions on her faces, but she can look surprisingly like her father when she doesn’t get what she wants. Her hair is cut in a bob just like her mother’s, making her look even more like Petra’s mini-me. It’s just her eyes, a light gray just like her father’s, that she’s inherited from Levi.

“Sweet like her mother too,” Eld grins. He’s especially sweet on the young girl now that he’s expecting a child of his own with his wife soon. Of Levi’s men, he’s the one that looks after Grace the most. “Can you imagine having a miniature version of Levi with the same temperament? I’m sure that’d be a nightmare.”

“No, she’s nothing like either of them,” Auruo sniffs as he ties off the end of the girl’s braided pigtails. He holds her close to him as if to keep her from running away and morphing into her parents. Glaring at the others, he says, “Don’t you ever say that about Grace! She’s a complete angel, nothing at all like her mother! Petra can be cruel sometimes, you know.”

“That’s true,” Eld says darkly. “She did kick my ass at practice a little harder than she needed to.”

Gunter rolls his eyes. “But didn’t you once say you were going to marry her before, Auruo?”

Even if it is true, Auruo looks horrified at this reminder. “As if she’s anyone special!” Auruo scoffs, but there’s a slight blush of pink in his cheeks hinting at his embarrassment. “I could have any woman I want, you know. I let Captain Levi have Petra as his wife. I was the one to give them their blessing after Petra’s old dad, and I was their best man, wasn’t I?”

“But if you could have any woman you want, why are you still single, Auruo?” Eren asks curiously.

“Ah, you youngsters don’t understand love and woman,” Auruo splutters, visibly turning redder by the minute. “I said I could have anyone I liked! It’s just that I choose to stay single, you hear? I’m perfectly happy by myself! Don’t I just seem like the happiest man – gah!” He groans, a hand clasped to his mouth because he’s bitten his tongue from talking too fast again. Even after all these years, he still hasn’t gotten out of the habit of it.

“You don’t seem all that happy right now,” Eld says unsympathetically. He, like the others, makes no move to comfort Auruo or see if he’s okay, used to the man hurting himself in this way already.

“Hurt?” Grace asks, turning to the man after hearing his cries of pain. She reaches up to pat his sandy locks in the same way that her mother does to her when she needs comfort. She struggles to stand, clinging to his shoulder to help her upright, and reaches up to press a sweet kiss against his forehead. She pulls back to observe his reaction, tilting his head to ask, “Better?”

To her surprise, Auruo bursts into tears and throws his arms around her, holding her more tightly than he had just done before. “Never change, Grace!” he cries, sobbing as he holds her close. “Just stay the way you are now!”

“Still hurts?” Grace asks, her tiny brow knitted in confusion. Using the sleeve of her dress, she dabs at his face to wipe away his tears. When she still sees that he’s crying, she kisses her hand and repeated presses it against his face – his cheeks, his forehead, his nose, his chin – until his crying has stopped and he can’t help but smile at her. Seeing Auruo’s smile, the little girl smiles herself. “Good!”

“Ah, Grace,” Eld says, pushing himself off the wall he’s leaning against. He crouches down so that he’s eye-level with Grace now. Holding out a perfectly fine finger, he says to her, “We’ve all got boo-boos, Grace. Can you make them all better for us?”

“You shouldn’t trick her like this,” Gunter murmurs as he watches Grace toddle over to where Eld is to kiss is finger better. Still, he doesn’t object when Grace makes her way to him to kiss the side of his head to make his imaginary headache disappear. He gives her a gracious smile, which only makes her all the more enthusiastic to give Eren his kiss.

“Oh, it’s okay,” Eren laughs when she runs to him, arms outstretched to throw around his neck. He tries to wave her off, but the girl is stubborn and is beginning to look more like her father the more upset she gets. Finally, Eren gives in, allowing her to give him a kiss on his cheek.

It is, of course, right when she presses her little pink lips against his cheek that Levi opens the door, returning home after his meeting with the other military officials. When he sees Eren with his child, his face grows dangerously dark and Eren can only squeak out a weak hello while his comrades watch in amusement.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing with my daughter,” Levi growls.

“Daddy! Welcome home!” his daughter squeals. Grace, seeing that her father has come home, quickly forgets about the rest of them. She springs up, stumbling over to her father and nearly tripping over herself in her excitement.

Levi’s expression softens, and he bends over to pick her up. “Where’s your mother? Is she still sleeping upstairs?” he asks Grace. He reaches up to brush a lock of her golden hair away from her face as she nods at him. He listens to his daughter as she babbles about her day – how nice it was to play with Uncle Eld and Uncle Eren, how fun and silly Uncle Auruo, and how Uncle Gunter promised to teach her how to make flower crowns once springtime came along and the flowers began to bloom again – and it looks as though he’s forgotten about his daughter kissing Eren until he passes by the poor boy and shoots him a deadly glare.

The other men stifle their laughter as Eren cowers in his chair. He pities the poor guy who ends up dating Levi’s daughter.

“What a cute baby,” Petra coos as she holds Eld’s little daughter in her arms. She wiggles a finger in the infant’s face, laughing when she feels the tiny fingers wrap around her hand. She presses a kiss on the little girl’s forehead before pulling the girl’s knitted cap over her head. “Little Lizzie is so sweet! It seems like ages ago that Grace was this small.” “Does the time really pass by so quickly?” Eld’s wife Rosalind asks with a laugh. She takes her daughter from Petra and rocks her gently in her arms. It only takes a few bars of a familiar lullaby to lull the baby to sleep. “Grace is three now, isn’t she? She’ll be four soon.” “Well, it’s sweet when they’re young, but it’s still just as lovely seeing them grow up,” Petra says as she gazes affectionately at her young daughter who’s busy unwrapping presents with her uncles. She reaches over to put little knitted mittens over baby Lizzie’s hands. “I think her uncles love her more and more each day, especially on days like today.” 

As it turns out, the members of Squad Levi are very big fans of children, especially ones that are as small and sweet as Grace and Lizzie. When Grace was born, practically all the members – all grown men that hadn’t shed a tear even in the hardest of times – were bawling when they had seen the tiny baby in Petra’s arms. And with the birth of the new Ackerman baby came an unspoken competition that began before any of the men had even realized it. They would be competing to see who could make the put the baby to sleep faster, make the baby smile the widest, or feed the baby without making a mess. In a way, it was helpful having them all around, like the child had four extra fathers (much to Levi’s annoyance). As the child grew older, the men only became more delighted in finding ways to please the girl now that she could verbally express her love for a certain present. “I hope you dote on my daughter half as much,” Eld says a little jealously as he watches his comrades fuss over Grace, trying to pick out their present to unwrap first. “Are you not satisfied with the package of diapers I bought for Elizabeth? You and your wife will both be thanking me later,” Levi says as he takes a long sip of his tea. He looks over lazily at the pile of presents underneath the tree that his daughter is currently mulling over. He spots one particularly large package – it’s wrapping is unnecessarily flashy and has ribbons tied elegantly around it with a tag in a loopy script that Grace can’t possibly read yet. Levi gestures towards it. “Aren’t you spoiling my daughter too? That’s your gift in the corner, isn’t it?” “Th-that’s…Rose and I just happened to come across the perfect gift for Grace while we were shopping for Lizzie!” Eld says, suddenly going red. He reaches up to brush back his hair as he tries to avoid Levi’s gaze. “It only made sense to buy it!” Levi doesn’t respond, but it’s apparent from his disinterested expression that he doesn’t believe Eld one bit. He leans against the wall, watching as his daughter becomes flustered over which present to pick because she’s too afraid of hurting any of her uncle’s feelings. Eventually, her father says, “Sweetie, pick one. You’ll open all of them eventually, so it doesn’t really matter.” “Ah, this one!” Grace says, pointing at the sparkly package from Eld and his wife. “Ha!” Eld says, throwing his fist triumphantly in the air. He smirks at his other friends, proud to be chosen first, until he notices his wife and the captain raising their eyebrows at him. He clears his throat, fidgeting with the collar of his sweater, and says, “Yes, that one was from Auntie Rosalind and me, Grace.” “Remember to say ‘thank you,’” Petra gently reminds her daughter, who is still star-struck at the sparkly wrapping around the box. “Oh!” Grace says with a nod. She picks herself up off the floor and toddles over to Eld, giving the man a quick hug around his legs as a thank you. She walks over to Rosalind and gives her a hug too, bending down to press a small kiss on little Elizabeth’s forehead as well. “Thank you!” “Aw, how cute,” Rosalind says, reaching out to caress Grace’s rosy cheek. “You’re very welcome, Grace.” “Yes, very welcome,” Eld agrees, impatiently tapping his foot. He walks over to Grace, ushering her back over to the gift. “Now open your present so that everyone can see!” “Just because your present looks good on the outside doesn’t mean it’s going to be the best,” Auruo mutters under his breath. When Eld shoots Auruo a glare, the man simply scowls back. Grace pulls off the ribbon tying the present together, letting it float to the floor as she tears off the glossy wrapping paper. She must take after her father when it comes to messes, because she tears off the gift wrap as carefully as possible before folding it up neatly (or as neatly as a three-year-old can fold paper) and putting it down on the floor next to the ribbon. By the time Grace is pulling off the cover of the box, Levi is beaming at how well-behaved his daughter is. “Oh! Bear!” the girl exclaims when she finally pulls out a large stuffed bear from the box. The giant plush is nearly as tall as she is, a scarlet ribbon tied around its neck. Grace hugs it tightly, burying her face in its soft white coat. “So soft!” “Oh, shut it,” Gunter mumbles, glowering when he sees Eld’s smug grin. He tries to get Grace to notice his own gift, subtly pushing it towards her so that she’ll notice it. “Hey, Grace, why don’t you open your other presents too!” “Okay!” Grace says excitedly. She sits down next to the gift Gunter had pushed towards her, setting her new teddy bear down carefully so that it’s sitting down next to her. She unwraps this gift as slowly as she had the last one. When she finally unwraps it, she finds a beautifully illustrated book underneath. The vibrant leather cover is embossed with golden characters across it. The little girl marvels at how smooth the surface feels underneath her fingers before opening up to admire the intricate artwork inside. “Pretty!” “It’s gorgeous,” Petra says, but her brow is knitted in confusion. “But, Gunter, you know she can’t read yet.” “She’ll be able to read in no time. She’s very bright like her mother,” Gunter says with a wave of his hand, ignoring the dark look he receives from his captain. He’s too busy accepting a hug from Grace to notice much of anything right now. “She can look at the pictures while you’re reading these stories to her in the meantime.” “Thank you!” Grace says again while snuggling her head into her uncle’s shoulder. “I love it!” “Grace, Grace!” Auruo calls, waving a hand over so that she’ll finally leave Gunter’s side. He pats a big box next to him. It’s more hastily wrapped – plain brown wrapping paper stamped with moons and stars with a sparkling gold bow at the top. “How about you open Uncle Auruo’s present next, Grace? It’ll make me very happy!” “Ooh,” Grace says. She’s so distracted by the glittering bow to noticed Eren’s dejected expression from being chosen last. The girl eagerly plucks the bow off the box and puts it on her dress. She looks down at it, moving this way and that to see how the light catches on the sparkly ribbon. “I like it, Uncle Auruo!” “Then you’ll like your actual gift even better!” Auruo says, impatiently tapping the box. He forces a smile on his face, ignoring the amused laughs from everyone else. “Don’t you want to open the box too?” “Okay,” the girl says cheerfully. She goes on to rip off the tape from the package and unfold the paper away from it. It takes her a while because the package is so large – quite a bit bigger than the package that Eld and Rosalind had given her – but she finally manages to unwrap it. The gift inside is too big for her to carry out by herself, so Auruo and Gunter bring it out of its box. “Oh, that is lovely!” Rosalind gasps. “But isn’t it a bit…much?” Petra asks, her brow knitted together worriedly. “Auruo, we can’t possibly accept this!” “Nonsense!” Auruo says, his chest swelling with pride. He puts a hand lovingly on the hand-crafted rocking horse that Grace is now climbing on. His fingers go over the intricate details – the beautifully carved face, the bright blue beaded eyes, and the gorgeously braided mane. It’s clear from how he looks at his work with such self-satisfaction that he’s quite pleased with himself. “It’s just made with leftover wood from the chair I made for my brother’s desk. It really isn’t that big of a deal. Besides, look at how much Grace loves it!” “Mommy, look at this pony!” Grace says cheerfully as she rocks on the horse. She pets it mane, admiring the ribbons at the end of each braid. “So pretty!” “Yes, sweetie,” Petra says with a quick smile. She looks over at Levi, her smile replaced with that same concerned expression. “Levi!” Levi usually listens to his wife. She’s the only one whose orders he’ll follow aside from Erwin’s, but he can’t help but see the delighted smile on his daughter’s face as she rides the wooden horse. He shrugs, mumbling, “I don’t see the harm in it. It seems he made it during his spare time anyway.” Even though Auruo looks at her smugly, Petra scowls back at him. “Er, Grace,” Eren says suddenly. He tries to avoid Levi’s gaze, keeping his head down and only looking at Grace instead. Almost shyly, he pushes his own gift – a rectangular box much smaller than either Eld’s and Auruo’s gifts – toward Grace. “Would you like to open my gift maybe?” “Yes please!” Grace says eagerly, hurrying off her horse and stumbling over to Eren. She’s oblivious to her father’s darkened expression as she sits in Eren’s lap and begins to open up her package. “You know, it’d be faster if you just ripped it off like this,” Eren says. He takes the edge of the wrapping paper and tears it off with a loud rip. The noise is loud enough to surprise Grace, making her laugh. Delighted, she follows suit, tearing off long strips and throwing them in a pile next to her while her father’s glare deepens. Finally, Grace pulls off the lid of the box and to reveal a scarf. She takes it off, marveling at its pretty color. Even though it’s only done in one simple stitch, her eyes are wide as she feels the soft yarn in her hands. It’s a little too long, hanging past her waist even after Eren wraps it around her twice, but she loves it anyway. She squeals when she runs her fingers along the fringe, laughing as the yarn tickles her fingers. She’s so pleased with her gift that she runs around the room showing it off to the other adults and letting them feel how soft it is. “I think she likes it,” Eren says with a nervous laugh when he sees Grace show little Elizabeth the scarf. He looks over at the captain, but Levi continues to glower at him. Somehow, he thinks it would have been better to give Grace something that wouldn’t have elicited such a delighted response. “Which one do you like best, Grace?” Levi asks when his daughter runs to him. He picks her up, trying to untangle the scarf from her. “The book? Or the bear?” “This one!” Grace says, holding out the scarf to her dad with a big smile. “But what about the pictures in the book? You liked the pictures, didn’t you?” Levi asks a little more desperately this time. “Or how nice and fluffy the bear was? What about the rocking horse from Uncle Auruo? You can ride it again.
