17. Describe a fic that is still in the ‘ideas’ stage.

Ooh thank you for the ask!

So I’ve got an idea for a Prodigal Son fic where Dani and Malcolm are questioning a witness/victim/some fella at an office and then a small team of gun toting yahoos come in and shoot the place up. It quickly turns into a hostage situation and Malcolm gets hurt (of course) so he has to try and coach Dani into talking the shooters down and getting to the bottom of why they’re there. Malcolm also tries to barter himself for the other hostages. I don’t know how plot-heavy it’ll be but there are some cool scenes I’m excited to write :)

1. favorite fic you wrote this year

Ah I’m going to cheat because I can’t pick one right now :)

Technically I finished the only one whose broken heart still has broken parts in January this year, so it kind of counts? And it’s a Christmas fic and reading it again recently has kind of inspired me to make an effort to put lights up and switch them on nearly every day and buy a damn poinsettia for the windowsill this year. Also it’s actually finished (!) and I can’t tell you what that does for my sense of achievement.

as though it were your own vanishing song because it was quick to write! And technically finished (let’s not talk about the sequel because I might cry). Plus there are some lines I really love in there, a gorgeous Mary Oliver quote I stumbled across and it was so satisfying to fix that stupid courtyard scene even a little bit.

And we know how the light works (even though it isn’t remotely finished) because it was such a cathartic howl of grief and rage I needed after the way TPs2 ended, it has some of my absolute favourite lines and imagery in there and some absolutely shameless use of Persuasion as a metaphor that weirdly turned out to fit even better than intended. Also I finally got a Richard Siken quote in for a title, woohoo!

Maybe my favorite line in here is “Angel makes a sound, a quiet, closed-eyed, hit-in-the-stomach sound that even after a thousand nights of fighting side by side she’d never imagined he could make” - I have no idea what this would sound like, and I also know exactly what this would sound like

(I recently reread this one and there were a couple of times where I was like, “Oh, am I maybe a good writer? Suspicious...” I guess that’s a fairly open secret: I reread my own fic all the goddamn time.)

How I feel about this character:

Oh boy. You know, my first watch through I was already deep Giles trash, so when Ethan was taken away I was honestly kind of like “oh thank goodness this thorn in Giles’ side is gone.”

But then on subsequent viewings I came to love that whenever Ethan was around we were getting Prime Giles Episodes (The Dark Age, Band Candy, A New Man) or at least new information about Giles like the first time we see him lose his cool in Halloween.

The second time I watched A New Man, during the scene with Ethan in the bar I was like “huh. There’s some tension here beyond their appearances together in canon.”

Going back, rewatching all the episodes Ethan appears in, I started getting ideas about what all might have happened in their wild youth together before Randall died and Rupert went back to the Watchers, leading them to how they act around each other now.

Then I decided to write about it. And in writing half of my fic from Ethan’s point of view, I found myself examining his emotions and motivations a lot closer, and ended up falling head over heels for the guy. He’s selfish and cunning, but he craves attention. His anger and need to screw with Rupert is misguided, but coming from a place of hurt. He’s a disaster, but he’s MY disaster.

The people I ship romantically with him:

Only Rupert, but that’s partially because Ethan only ever really interacts one-on-one with either Rupert or Buffy. Given the chance, I think Ethan could have chemistry with anyone. In a great fic by @gilescandy Ethan, beaten and barely able to breathe, makes the effort to say “I’m everyone’s type.” and I adore that about him.

My favorite non-romantic relationship with this character (this encapsulates the favorite friendship question too):

Like I said above, unfortunately he doesn’t interact with most of the characters in any meaningful way. I think he and Buffy could have fun if the circumstances were different- they’d have appreciation for each other’s wit. There’s a lot to explore within the other members of the Eyghon gang as well. 

My unpopular opinion for this character:

I don’t know if it’s unpopular, but I think he was criminally underutilized in the show. As a villain, as a villain-turned-white-hat, anything, I want more!

One thing I wish would happen/would have happened in canon:

Obviously I’d love a deeper exploration of Ethan and Rupert’s friendship (or whatever) before things went sour, but also: Spike appears in A New Man, and yet he and Ethan never meet, which feels like an INCREDIBLE missed opportunity.

My crossover ship:

Someone either here or on Twitter brought up Ethan in comparison to Gabriel/Loki/the Trickster from Supernatural, and while I don’t necessarily ship them, I think that could be an amazing tag team of mayhem.
