YESSSS the end of prodigal son!!! These kind of insane obsessed weirdos! Thank you so much for all the hard work you put in to telling the story. I love that they tore apart and were miserable but then ended up back together because they… were just made for each other.
The thing I will admit I’m still absolutely dying to see— if you’ll ever add anything more— is how they’d negotiate an engagement/wedding with Dennis’ mom knowing full well what’s going on. Because, as Robby points out, he’s gonna marry his boy at some point.
Okay, so I will probably write this into something more coherent and long-form at some point, but.
Y'all, Dennis will never be telling his family about Robby. Never, ever, ever. That is just never going to be a reconciliation that could happen.
He'll live his life at something of a distance, pretending to be a maiden aunt and putting up with questions of 'when are you gonna settle down and find a nice guy?'
They will absolutely get married, but it won't be for anyone else to know about. Just the two of them, and a celebrant. They'll do it privately, their vows will be weird and too intense. They'll wear their wedding rings on chains around their necks, so people don't ask too many questions.
Technically, sure, they could invite their friends who know nothing about who Robby is to Dennis, but they spend half their lives pretending not to be what they are. Having to put on a mask and watch their mouths and what they call one another around company.
Their wedding is a space where they don't want to have to pretend they're not insane for each other.
Sure, they can't come right out in front of the celebrant and say 'I, Dennis Whitaker, take my father'. But they can at least be intense and strange together.
