Grad School: Year 1 Versus Year 2

My second year in the TESOLAL program has been very different than my first year In my first semester, I was introduced to  different theories, and in the second semester we had the opportunity to explore how we would put the theory into practice.   For example, I took a course my second semester called “Technology and Language Teaching” with Dr. Carolin Fuchs.  The main focus of the course was to look at technological tools and see how we could use them in the classroom.  Essentially, we were developing the skills to make informed decisions, a necessary tool in our future classrooms.  This semester I’ve continued to build on my first year, but now, I am actually making these decisions.

Ultimately, I have to say that the TESOLAL program at TC was definitely well designed.  It’s hard to appreciate this as a first year, because we don’t know what is coming next.  As a second year, however, it is much easier to see the progression through the program.  The first year helps us understand the theories and learn about best practices for teaching, while the second year gives us the opportunity to explore our interests in a real context.  For me, one of my biggest goals has been to be a better teacher, and so my second year has included a large focus on teaching in the CEP.  In addition,  there are also many opportunities to practice research.  I have been able to use the theories and practices that were introduced in my first year to get to do research on the CEP.  For example, in addition to my teaching, I am also participating in a yearlong internship offered by Dr. Jim Purpura, where we are working on changing the placement test utilized in the CEP program.  This involves analyzing the students within the program, analyzing the syllabus of the courses at all levels, looking at new assessment procedures, and redeveloping a wide scale placement test.  This is not as direct as teaching, but it can largely impact what happens in the classroom.  The internship would have been impossible as a first year, but is an opportunity for second years to not only participate in research, but to additionally design and implement a new test.

Overall, our first year at TC in the TESOLAL program gives us the ability to learn from the theories and learn practices from other teachers.  Our second year allows us to determine where we want to go after the program and to actually use what we have learned during our first year for our future goals.  As a result, the second year has been much more demanding that the first year in some ways, but it’s also been very fulfilling.  It feels as though I am actually making a difference not only for myself as a teacher, but also, potentially in the field.  It is hard to believe that my classmates and I have come so far in only a little over a year!
