Five national leaders plus two leaders of multinational groupings will trump a Putin any day.

With population, the combined total of France, Finland, Germany, Italy, and the UK is 287.5 million. Russia's population is 140.8 million. In terms of economics, Russia's GDP is barely equal to Italy's alone – never mind the other four countries. Russia may have nuclear weapons, but so do Britain and France. The power of nations is not determined by Mercator projection maps.

The Europeans are on to something. There is strength in unity.
