Pier 124
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Pier 124 also known as Graffiti Pier, is a go to place for graffiti artists and vandalists. Every inch of this pier is covered in layers of spray paint. To some it would be considered destruction of property and to others its a colorful array of art. Pier 124 used to be used for transportation of coal. On top of the pier, there used to run tracks for the various coal cars and machinery. You are able to climb on top of the pier since someone wedged rail spikes into a tree. It is not the safest manner of climbing, but for adventurers, it gets the job done. There is a beautiful view of the Delaware river from the top. The pier went out of use in 1991 because coal mining had moved south. This location is the busiest abandoned place I have been to. You are always accompanied by fellow travelers.

Journal: Graffiti Pier Pt.3
On the banks of the Central Delaware River, the eerie remains of a coal loading dock that’s been transformed into a street art hotspot sit on a vacant pier, covered with years of graffiti. Graffiti Pier is private property and anyone visiting is trespassing. While you cannot currently visit the Graffiti Pier itself, you can get views of it from the river, surrounding piers and land, and from the road. It is currently in the process of being turned into a park, so soon enough, the Graffiti Pier will be open for visitors, but just not yet. but the surroundings that are covering and apart of the pier itself, is a masterpiece that canvas the art of nature with great scenery of the city across the river. It shows the beauty of the forest and how it decorates the art that is bouncing off the pavement. The structure is eroding and is not the most structurally sound place in the city. But it offers so much more than the designs for the trees and the river set off the sense of colorful restricted canvas that fills the interest of those who go against the law to the see the hidden features the art connecting with nature. What makes it pop out the. most is the location and how it's covered with trees, rivers, sandlots, and so much more. What I found interesting about was that the area Is covered in expired fruits that cover the grounds of the pier. This place has so much art that brightens the area bringing more things to life not just the street art or area it’s at but the idea of these artists. After observing your surroundings deeply for your photo essay, what has been a reoccurring idea, feeling or thought in your mind? I feel as doing this entire observation was a great experience due to the fact that I learned and got to explore out of my confront zone seeing the true beauty behind the art of the street and speaks a lot more than craft but has meaning in the art. I felt during this entire process that the image of having free speech thru your art creates a message of how that we should value the craft of one’s belief. This idea has bought a lot of thought and meaning to me making me see the art of the Philly streets and how these artists cherish their creative though a spray can. Making me want to see the world revolve around the way of a spray can and how this could benefit us by speaking message in a creative eye. Do you feel you have been interested in and/or able to express these things in your photo essay? Yes, very much I felt as the my way of art is seen the creativity and color of the pieces I want to capture in the photo. I gained a lot knowledge but seen the craft done on those walls and how they created the pieces with spray cans. I found interesting that this place hold a lot of history and meaning from it causing the place to memorable. I enjoy walking around the place and capturing the art of this place and witnessing the art be created infant of me and seeing that this art should shown not hidden away by the law. I feel I got express my street side in this art by showing what the artists do to show their art even its against the law but they do it for a good cause it spices up the world of art. I wanted to show that this place had so much that needed to be seen of it’s beautiful pieces but will be forgotten. GraffitI Pier is an unforgettable place and will be never misplaced for I would decide to go back anytime to get to experience that feeling of self-risk and confidence to go against the odds but overcome it. Thank you for going along with me on my photo essay and I hope you enjoyed this great discovery that I got to share with you and the world it meant a lot to experience this and get to express my thoughts on it.
