Portraits of Brandon Boyd by Aaron Schwartz (Part1)

"During the Grafik14 exhibit in Zurich, where I was showing some illustration and typography work, I was fortunate enough to meet Brandon Boyd, who was the special guest that weekend. Known widely for his role as lead singer and songwriter for the California-based rock band Incubus, Brandon is also a skilled artist and illustrator with a wide range of work. Throughout the weekend we spoke about art and music, drank red wine with his “art-mom” Jen, and on one of the afternoons spent some time outside shooting portraits. He is a kind, calm, interesting, easy going and handsome character whom I’m stoked to have met." Eric Andersen

Eric Andersen gestaltet derzeit ausschliesslich Plakate. Seine einzigartige Bildsprache macht den Wahlzürcher dänischer Herkunft zu einem für Auftraggeber äusserst begehrten Grafiker. Andersens Kundschaft ist eine eng vernetzte Szene. Sei es der Club 'Zukunft' nahe der Zürcher Langstrasse, Aufträge aus seinem Freundeskreis oder die Sängerin Sabina Leone. Er versieht die Plakate für alle Kunden mit seiner eigenständigen Bildsprache mit grossem Wiedererkennungswert. Vorschreiben lässt er sich dabei weder Motiv, Typografie noch Farbe. Auch interessiert ihn eine herkömmliche Formatwahl nicht besonders; es kann sein, dass die bei Andersen in Auftrag gegebene Geburtsanzeige im Posterformat verschickt werden muss.

Jeder angenommene Auftrag stellt für Andersen eine Herausforderung dar. Inspirieren lässt er sich dabei beispielsweise von Epochenstilen wie Disco oder Art Deco. Die Farben wirken, als wären sie aus einer anderen, man möchte sagen: besseren Zeit. Besonders zur Geltung kommt sein aussergewöhnliches Talent in der Farbwahl, wenn er sich auf einen Ton beschränkt. Mit der lauten, billigen Hochglanzästhetik kann Andersen nicht viel anfangen und manche seiner Plakate sehen so wertvoll aus, dass sie eigentlich fast zu schade sind, um sie in den Strassen anzubringen. Vielleicht gerade deshalb macht sich der Grafiker selbst auf die Suche nach geeigneten Ecken für die Plakatierung, wo sie in Ruhe altern und vergilben können. Bis zum Schluss bleibt der Arbeitsprozess in seinen Händen.

Eric Andersen ist ein Künstler, wenn es darum geht, das passende Bild für seine Plakate zu finden. Es erstaunt daher auch nicht, dass der Grafiker einige seiner Affichen mit einer Unterschrift versieht. Mit einer wissenden Hand setzt er die poetischen und zugleich aussagekräftigen Bilder in Szene, um die herum er mit viel Gespür und präzisen Eingriffen die Typografie arrangiert. -www.swissdesignawards.ch-
