Milestone Monday
On this day, March 9 in 1892, the English novelist, poet, garden and travel writer, and friend and lover of Virginia Wolff, Vita Sackville-West (1892-1962) was born at Knole, her family's ancestral estate in Kent. She was married to the English diplomat Harold Nicolson (1886-1968), who from 1925 to 1927 lived in Tehran where Sackville-West often visited him. Sackville-West's book A Passenger to Tehran (shown here), published in 1926 by Virginia and Leonard Wolff's Hogarth Press, recounts her time there. The couple were involved in planning the coronation of Rezā Khan and got to know the six-year old Crown Prince Mohammad Reza well (last photograph). Our copy bears Christmas wishes signed by Sackville-West (below).
Also shown here is a small chapbook of Sackville-West's poem Invitation to Cast Out Care, published by Faber & Faber in 1929, with illustrations by English artist Graham Sutherland (1903-1980).
