Ignorant and Unexposed

Part 1 - Ignorant Today, after a long while, the following conversation took place at the end of my class Classmate: Where did you go to high school? Myself: Oh, I'm not from here. Classmate: Where are you from? Myself: Guam. Classmate: Guam? Oh, GUAM?! Really?! Myself: Yup. Classmate: How long have you been here? Myself: Two years. I moved - "Interruptingly", Classmate: You have really good english. Myself: Yeah, we speak english there. Classmate: So you only speak english? Myself: I can speak something else but not very much. Classmate: Oooh, ok. First of all, "You have really good english" indicates to me that you don't speak grammatically correct English. Secondly, just because I'm from Guam, or anywhere beyond the USA borders does not automatically mean I have never spoken, learned, or used the English language prior to my arrival to WI. Thirdly, did no one listen in their history course? Guam is a U.S. Territory. Assume we speak English. That is what you understand and hear me speak, right? I know we all say that assuming things can have it's negative and positive aspects, but don't tell me "you have good English" if you can't even say it grammatically correct. You should have said "You speak English really well". (I'm glad I actually liked her. She's nice, so i wasn't annoyed by her.) Part 2 - Unexposed Later in the afternoon, I was doing my job as an ambassador and giving a campus tour. I finished speaking about our cafeteria and started walking. No one was talking, the group was looking around, and out of no where, this short conversation occurred. Guest Student: "ARE YOU HMONG?!" Myself: "No, hehe. Do you want to guess again?" Guest Teacher: "At least you figured out she's Asian." Myself: "I'll accept 'Asian', but do you want to try again?" ---No answer from Guest Student--- Just because I have small eyes, am short, have long black hair, and have a brown skin color does not make me Hmong. There are other "Asian" groups besides the Hmong people. Read a book, youtube Asian cultures, get out of WI. You'll see that there are more than just the Hmong people of WI. I may not have been offended because it wasn't the first time I was asked a question like that. I would love to answer anyone's question about my ethnicity, culture, birthplace, heritage, race, or anything of the sort that is appropriate to answer. However, some pieces of advice kid? First, do NOT yell at people. Second, do NOT ask a specific question, such as "ARE YOU HmONG?!", impulsively out of pure curiosity. Thirdly, learn how to properly ask "ARE YOU HmONG?!", or any question of the sort. A more appropriate way would be "What is your ethnic background?" Lastly, you may not have asked me, but maybe you've asked someone else or will in the future; but never, NEVER ask someone "What are you?" (unless you want to get shot). Thank you, and Good night. SMiLE ^__^ Original blog on www.myspace.com/mangodork as "Ignorant and Unexposed" under the blogs box ***This note/blog not written out of hate, prejudice, or discrimination. I was simply writing about my experiences today and my concern toward the fact that some people are clearly still ignorant and unexposed during this 21st century. I am human, so I am also at fault for being ignorant and unexposed to several things in life, most especially because I have not experienced the world at its fullest. However, I at least try my best to figure out ways in which I can address my problem and prevent any other issues from occurring.
