Sylvain’s birthday. We had planned to go swim in the river by the hunting grounds today in honor of him -- something even Glenn looked forward to for weeks. It was a rare occasion that we should all be together like this in Fhirdiad ;; even rarer was the opportunity to celebrate birthdays with one another.
I imagined how cool the water would be in the summer’s heat and thought up a ploy on how Felix or I might win in a race of swimming upstream against Glenn. However, our plans quickly changed when we saw Sylvain limp to the breakfast table with a bandaged leg and a crutch to hold him up. Ingrid tried ( she really did ) to inquire what happened, but all Sylvain did was twist and turn his words into some story about being careless at night.
“What about our plans to go swimming ?” Felix asked. ( But I knew he was more concerned about the other’s injuries than a foiled plan. The tears in his eyes said as much. ) Sylvain waved dismissively at the notion ;; he’ll just sit by the rocks and watch, he said. To which, his servant ( now turned nurse ) was vocally against the idea. His broken leg was still too tender, she said. And his limp would only slow him down during the walk to the river.
We had no choice but to change our plans. We settled with some games in the palace. Ones that Sylvain could join in -- ones that wouldn’t bore Glenn. Then we had a hearty lunch that seemed to have everything Sylvain loved.
It was there I wondered whether we should invite Miklan ( I admittedly do not like him and did not want him at the table. But father says a prince cannot discriminate and that would simply be plain rude ). The room fell quiet for a moment -- about five seconds or so -- but the wait felt longer. Sylvain’s laughter suddenly cut the silence as he waved dismissively at the notion ( again ;; he keeps doing that, I notice ). “He’ll only be a killjoy,” and Ingrid strongly agreed. ( Later, Felix would confide in me that he was glad Miklan did not come because he scared him. I feel like asking about him in the first place was a terrible, terrible mistake. )
Something is different in Sylvain -- he is more sullen and slowed down, and I don’t think it’s because of the injury. He taps out of games too soon and gives up easily. When he smiles, it’s so painfully bright that I don’t think he realizes how different he looks when he decides to put it away.
( I don’t think he realizes that I realize. Or at least, that I’m see. Or at least, that I think I’m seeing...Is this what happens when you turn thirteen ? )
