April 27, 1822
On this day in 1822, Hiram Ulysses Grant was born. He would grow into a young man with a love for horses and a pension for humility. He would suffer grievance after grievance, but he would persevere in the face of adversity. The American Civil War would then catapult him into fame, but still he would endure hardship as a civilian and as the 18th U.S. President. Ultimately, he would succumb to cancer, leaving his memoirs to financially support his family in his absence. But today, 203 years ago, he can rest easy in his mother’s arms.
