At first, seeing Nega Pigeon for the first time in far too long had been a joyous occasion for Avery. The bird had shown up very little since he moved out, and for the last few months had disappeared entirely leaving Avery to worry and wonder what had happened to his feathered friend.
But then today Nega had appeared out of nowhere. A relief. At first. But it didn’t take long for Avery to notice the small package around the bird’s neck. Was it meant for him? Who else could it be for, if it was around Nega Pigeon’s neck.
Carefully, he removed the tiny package from the bird’s neck. His fingers began to pull the paper wrappings off, the slightest tremble in them. Inside, another paper, rolled up around something. At first confusion clouded his gaze. Then concern, and finally horror.
In one hand, he held a letter, in another a vial. Alone it wouldn’t be too concerning. But the contents worried him. Blood. Why would anyone send him blood. As he began to read the letter, it made more sense.
It has been in my notice you have gone for many months. I will be telling you now to come home.
You should be noticing the vial with most mysterious blood yes? I’m sure you are to be wondering what it is from. Collected it my latest invention has. I’m sure your actor friend would be liking it back, yes?
You should be coming home now. A shame it would be if other friends were suffering of the same fate, no?
Avery felt his stomach drop. It was obvious who had sent this. And it didn’t take long to put two and two together to figure out what was happened. To an extent at least. He didn’t want to think about it, but he had to know. He had to know NOW.
With the letter and vial still in his hands, he rushed out of his room, Nega Pigeon perched tightly on his helmet. He was halfway through the living room before skidding to a stop. No, he didn’t forget anything. The tv was on. If it wasn’t important, he would have kept going, but it gave him most of the answers he needed.
