Katie: looked up from her notebook, startled. "Oh, hey. Uh, yeah. Guess I wasn't really in the partying mood after all." She laughed and shook her head. "What's up?"
Jake shrugged. "The person I was talking to just left. I was looking for you earlier but I see as though you made a beeline here." Looking over at her, he laughed noticing the notebook. "Studying people's behaviour or something?"
Katie: motioned for him to take a seat. "Yeah, everything was getting super coupley. I figured I'd just hang out back here for a while." She smiled at his comment and looked back down at the book in her lap. "Actually, I have a few questions for you, but this first." She handed him the Hemingway book and the CD.
Jake "I've got stuff for you as well." he said with a smile, handing over the Tolstoy book and the CD he made for her. As they switched items, Jake sat down beside her. "Oh, yeah? Alright, I've got answers for you then."
Katie: took the items, tucking them in her purse. "Thank you. Looking forward to listening to this." She looked down at her notebook, outlining with her pens. "Okay, favorite animal, favorite book, do you like me?"
Jake was thrown off by the many questions she listed. He wasn't quite sure if he heard them all correctly but a sort of panic had risen in him. "Dogs, Perks of Being a Wallflower- and I'm sorry, what was that?
Katie: nods and scribbles something in her notebook, starting to babble nervously. "I'm more of a cat person myself. Perks of Being a Wallflower is amazing, though. I didn't think it would be as good as people make it out to be. And it's nothing. I was just wondering because I like you and I was thinking maybe we could go on more dates like that potentially...but only with each other? I guess I like some dogs. Did you hear they're making a movie of Perks?"
Jake furrowed his eyebrows trying to catch the words she was saying. "You might wanna slow down there..." he warned in the midst of her talking. "Yea Perks is amazing and-" Jake froze when he caught her next words. Leaning back slightly, Jake took a sip of his drink, her babbling never seeming to stop. "Dates with each other? That sort of sounds like a relationship..." he said slowly, looking over at her.
Katie: looked up from her notebook, wide-eyed. "Is that bad? I thought maybe since..." She shook her head. "You never answered my question. Do you like me?"
Jake looked away for a moment biting his tongue. He wasn't quite sure if he should tell her the truth or not, it might get him away from the conversation if he said the lie. Jake chose to not answer though again. "Can we talk about something else, yea?" Rubbing the back of his neck, Jake sighed. "That might be best."
Katie: reached over and touched his arm so he'd look at her. "Answer my question." She said, looking him straight in the eye.
Jake turned his head at her touch. He kept his eyes away however, "No, not-" Jake sighed and flickered his green eyes to her, "Okay, yea. I do." he answered her quietly.
Katie: exhaled, hope appearing in her eyes. "Okay then. So if I like you, and you like me, what's the problem?"
Jake swallowed, his eyes not meeting hers again as he noted the look in hers. "I don't do relationships." he told her, "Feelings and relationships, they're just all messy. I don't do them anymore."
Katie: looked back down at her lap. "Well, I'm not messy. I'm the most neat and efficient person you'll ever meet. And I don't know a ton about relationships but I know that I like you and maybe I'm imagining it, but I feel like there's something between us. And I wouldn't hurt you."
Jake "I'm not doubting that there is something between us, you're not imagining anything. I sort of caught on to thinking there was something after our date. I just... I've been through relationships and I've seen my own parent's relationship crumble. I haven't been able to find anything good to come out of a relationship, I just see heartbreak." Jake sighed and took a sip of his drink, "It's not exactly fun."
Katie: played with a piece of paper from her notebook, suddenly unable to make eye contact. "There are nice things, I think. Like holding hands in a movie theater or watching a sunset together or talking on the phone for three hours about literature and music. Or kissing. Kissing is really nice when you know the person is always going to be around to kiss only you." She looked up at him, biting her lip.
Jake tried not to under the circumstances but he grinned and laughed quietly to himself, looking over at her. "You've put a lot of thought into this, haven't you?" he asked, curiously. He couldn't deny though, everything she had listed sounded good to him. He could picture it too.
Katie: scratched her head. "I always do my research thoroughly. This particular project included a lot of cheesy teen movies, but I'm not complaining. It all seemed pretty great to me, but I guess you don't see it that way."
Jake scratched the back of his head. "I've been through it, it has it's ups but then again it has it's downs- I don't know. I've been through some heartache and I had to watch my parent's go through it too. It's too much hurt." Jake bit his lip and looked over at her, "And I don't want you getting hurt."
Katie: "So you're saying that you're going to live the rest of your life in fear of something that could be really great, just because you've seen people get hurt by it before?" She sighed softly. "I don't think I'd get hurt, but even if I did, I'd make the heartbreak worthwhile."
Jake disregarded her other words, his mind currently stuck on the first thing she had said. It was true, he was living his life in fear of getting hurt again. Jake bit his lip and he repeated the words in his head: 'Something that could be really great'. With his forefinger, Jake turned her chin to face him and tilted it up. Leaning in, Jake gave her a kiss. His finger by then had dropped but only to move his hand to rest against her cheek.
Katie: kissed him back gently before pulling away and looking down. "That was nice. Does that mean we're..." She paused for a second, unable to actually articulate the word 'dating,' but still leaning in slightly to the hand on her face. "Because, if not, I don't think I can do this."
Jake gave a small nod and swallowed. "Can't live in fear forever, right?"
Katie: bit back a gigantic smile. "No. You can't." She whispered and leaned in, meeting his lips for a second kiss.
Jake kissed her back and pulled away, looking at her. Brushing his thumb against her cheek he chuckled, "So, girlfriend- sure you're not gonna get pissed off at me tomorrow and change your mind?"
Katie: laughed, studying his eyes. "Can't make any promises. Are you gonna try to hit on me on my living room couch?"
Jake scrunched his eyebrows and nodded, letting his hand drop from her face and to lean on the deck. "Most definitely."
Katie: "Well then, I think we can arrange for me not to get mad." She smiled, shifting her gaze from him to the night sky.
Jake looked at her notebook curiously, "Got any other questions in there?" he asked her curiously, picking up the book. "Did you seriously bring this here just to ask me those questions?"
Katie: reached for the notebook. "Gimme that." She said, making a face. "I have more questions. At least ten. But the notebook doesn't get opened by anyone but me."
Jake raised his eyebrows, "Why? Is this where you have your recordings of how you're going to kill me like I had in Hemingway?" he asked, teasingly. "Ten more? What could you possibly have to ask?"
Katie: flashes a wry grin. "That's exactly what's in here. You can't know my evil schemes, now can you?" She raised her eyebrows. "I'm a budding journalist. I take that question as a challenge. Now hand me the book?"
Jake shook his head and laughed. "Fine, here." he said, and extended the notebook to her. "You know, I'm only now more curious as to what is hiding in here. My name isn't scribbled in there, is it? Little school girl crush, eh?"
Katie: gave him a challenging gaze. "That's what you'd like to think." She flipped through pages lightning fast, landing on a page covered in questions. "Still wanna be interviewed for the Katie Matlin Daily?"
Jake shrugged, "Won't lie, it'd be amusing." he said with a grin. Watching her curiously as she flipped through the pages Jake looked up from the notebook to her eyes. "Bring on the questions."
Katie: laughed. "Schoolgirl crushes are okay if they're reciprocated." She traced through notes with a finger and looked up at him. "Okay, if you could have any superpower, what would it be?"
Jake bit his lip in thought. He was leaning back and forth between the ability to read other's thoughts or invisibility. "Uh.. invisibility. I'd use that advantage to scare people or play pranks." he told her, chuckling.
Katie: smiled at his answer. "Good choice. Um, oh. Wow. I can't believe I haven't asked you this one. What are your favourite sports?"
Jake took a sip of his drink and set it back on the step. "Ice Hockey, definitely. I really like baseball and golf too." he mentioned. "And if you weren't aware- I'm really involved with bmxing and a bit of skateboarding."
Katie: bit back the laugh on his mention of golf. "BMXing? That's really cool. You'll have to teach me some of that sometime. Are you a Leafs fan?"
Jake raised his eyebrows at her mentioning wanting to learn BMXing. "Will I have to cover you with bubble-wrap first? I've gotten some serious injuries over the years." he chuckled and then rubbed his hands together. "As for a Leafs fan? Completely- even though they do a good job at angering me sometimes."
Katie: rolled her eyes. "I'm not afraid of a few scratches, mister. I can handle myself." She grinned at his next comment. "Good. If you were a Habs fan, I would consider ending things right now."
Jake shook his head and laughed, "Hey now, I just now have you- I'm not letting you get away the same night." Jake took a sip of his drink and then looked over at her, "Tomorrow on the other hand..." he teased, grinning at her.
Katie: reached up and kissed him on the cheek. "I won't be getting away anytime soon." She laughed, giving him a smug smile. "Tomorrow you'll like me even more than you do today."
Jake raised his eyebrows, "Is that so? Will it be because I've broadened your music taste by tomorrow?" he asked her, still smiling a bit from her kiss. He wasn't used to her affection, it was something he'd get used to and he didn't mind having to.
Katie: wrinkled her nose. "Maybe. Or because you'll see me in the hall and think of my fabulous interviewing skills."
Jake nodded. "Oh right, right- of course. Like how you interviewed me on whether I like you or not." he said, biting back a smile. "Very smooth, Matlin. I can at least grant you with though that it was original."
Katie: looked away from him, shoulders shaking with silent laughter. "Don't know where I come up with these things. It worked, though, and that's the important part."
Jake "What'd you think I was going so say? You sort of tossed that question last and very quickly." he mentioned and then tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
Katie: shrugged slightly. "You could've said you didn't like me...I repulsed you...it would never happen...but you didn't and I didn't think you would." She checked her phone quickly. "It's late, wanna get out of here?"
Jake "Sure thing." he said and stood up from his seat. Holding his hand out to her, he helped her up and then wrapped his arms around her in a hug goodbye.
Katie: wrapped her arms around him in a hug, before gathering up her last ounce of courage and kissing him softly. "Night, boyfriend. See you tomorrow."
