CKA Week Participant: Casey Moore

Today's Comics Kick Ass Interview is with Casey Moore @CaseyMoore. Casey is my podcasting partner on the BSI Comics Podcast, Graphic Panels. Casey also supplements his podcasting, comics and drinking habits by working in the local film industry. He's planning on directing a film one day, but for some reason keeps rejecting my script, Buck Lightning Punches Hitler While Riding a Dragon on Saturn. Not sure why.

3. What was your first comic that you remember?

That is a hard one. Comics have just always been there for me. My mom would buy them for me to read. I remember her bringing me home comics and snickers when I burned my feet one time. I remember my dad taking me to the 7-Eleven by his place and buying me comics and an Icee. I remember pouring over comics with my godparents sons. I can't remember a time when I didn't have comics around. Sadly I have lost two collections to water damage, but I have always read comics. One that stands out from when I was a kid is an issue of Batman where he goes up against an illusionist. It wasn't a super criminal, just a true Batman detective story.

4. What is your all time favorite comic/ Graphic Novel?

Planetary is still the tops for me. It is such a deep and layered story. What looks on the surface like just a riff on 20th century pop culture is a much deeper look at the stories a lot of us have grown up watching or reading or being exposed to. And Warren Ellis brings everything to the story. So many ideas about our fictions and the last century and then there is everything about dimensions. Greatest comic ever in my opinion. One I re-read everyyear.

5. Favorite Writer? This is easy. Warren Ellis. He is easily the best. No BS or pretension. Solid stories where he usually sneaks in some pretty big science or tech or futurist ideas. The kind of stuff that can lead you down a rabbit hole of information. Or he just writes something incredibly great like Nextwave.

6. Favorite Artist? Paul Pope. Something about his work I just love. Looking forward to Battling Boy a lot.

7. What comic/GN would you give to someone who has no interest in comics?

This would depend on the person. I have given out Scott Pilgrim. I am trying to get my wife to read I Kill Giants. Really, it just depends on what the person's interests are. I would find the right comic for the right person. I don't think there is any one single comic. For a music person I would hand out Phonogram and to someone into politics and current event I would recommend DMZ.

8. If you could give one issue to a kid to inspire him/ her to read comics, what would it be?

At first glance this seems tough to me because of the big two cutting back on so much of what they are offering to kids to read. I want to say a trade of Batman: Brave & the Bold or Tiny Titans or Superman Family Adventures. All of those are books my son has loved. Just a she loved Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam. Sadly all of these can only be found in trades now since all have been canceled. I also love buying old comics collections for kids. DC has some great hardcover and softcover collections. Marvel is starting to put some out as well.  So I guess I don't have just one issue I would give a kid. Like adults, I would find what the kid wants and is into, and then go out and find the comic that fits him or her.
