The question of whether violent images should be censored for public viewership has been an on going debate in society. Over the years I have come across various tragic news stories on the net, but the photo for the story always had parts blurred out. Recently, ISIS has released youtube videos of them beheading American journalist and put it on the Internet. The media gets a hold of these videos and shares them to the public, but blurs out the graphic parts. I think this is wrong because we should not shelter the American people from this violence but inform them. People can not get the full impact that video has unless they see it in its entirety. In the reading by Sue Tait, “Pornographies of Violence? Internet Spectatorship on Body Horror,” the author discusses the impact graphic images have on the public. “The process of legitimizing the war footage hosted by Ogrish circumvents consideration of the range of materials hosted by the site… all categories of body horror become part of the public’s right to know, where knowledge is predicated on vision.” The media and the Internet have a duty to show these graphic images to the public uncensored and this will allow individuals to be properly informed about what is going on in society.
