We all have this chamber in the deep recesses of our minds, filled with mirrors and little tokens of our lives so far -- whether it may be that headless barbie doll you owned, your favourite records, or that plastic skull you got on e-bay for a dollar. Surrounded by all these objects, there’s a statue in the middle

of the room, which represents your psyche. See those people around it? That’s you, throughout the different stages of life, gradually chipping away at your brittle, hard exterior, to discover the more vulnerable, but more whole and beautiful crystal underneath. Although this process may be long and arduous, self-discovery and accepting all your flaws as well as strengths, will always be an exciting and meaningful experience.

Giant luminous mushrooms, bare dark shrubs, lush hedera underneath the blue night sky... It almost sems like a magic garden, but not quite. Some lost civilization used to prosper on this land before the feverish plants took over. What happened?

Graphit 2019 - Honorable Mention

“(re) Discovering the Past” by Ruolin Yan

Sometime last year while unpacking things after moving houses, I chanced upon a box containing things that were supposedly forgotten a long time ago. There were letters hat my parents wrote, old coke bottles from the 90s and a pager that stopped working ages ago. The discovery of this “time capsule” opened a “portal” to the past - I almost felt as if I was transported back to the simpler times, experiencing the file that the older generations had and watching their life stories unfold.

I personally think that unearthing the past stories is just as important as the discovery of new things - not only do we get a good storytelling session from our familier, but we also get to experience an unfamiliar world that ironically brings feelings of nostalgia.

I think discovery doesn’t have to be of something big, like treasure or a new species, but can include small realisations as well. In a country where we’re too often caught up in our work, we may forget to slow down, appreciate our surroundings, and realise their beauty and value. 

An important personal discovery I’ve made is that of beauty in Singapore’ urban landsape -- taking the time to observe little things like the leaves of trees blowing in the wind, the light of sun cast on buildings, unique skies and clouds etc. always fills me with happiness :D
