Are You Even Ready For It? | Steve Eckert Show Episode 57
People ask me about this horn a lot because of how it looks and the shiny neck. This is my back up tenor. Its a Selmer USA and was given to me by a really beautiful musician named Curtis Stigers back in 1996. When I arrived in NYC, I had a late 1930’s Buescher Aristocrat tenor that was falling apart and didn’t really have enough money to repair it the way it needed or get a new horn until many years later, so Getting this horn basically changed my life path (thanks Curtis!) because I was just hired in a band called The Niagaras and needed a modern sounding tenor which led to many other gigs, recording sessions and other various musical adventures. From my research, This particular Selmer horn is the only professional level tenor model that selmer ever manufactured in the US and it looks a lot like a Mark VI, but it’s from the 1980’s. I Love this horn so much, too. It wasvoverhauled by Mike Manning about 10-11 years or so ago and it’s been playing just amazing since then, but is probably overdue for an overhaul in the next year or 2. The story of the shiny neck: In 2009, The week that Manny’s closed on 48th street (I think it was moved inside sam Ash then, too) I walked in looking for a new neck because the original Selmer USA neck was patched up and made the tone very dark. Too dark for playing with amplified rock and funk bands like Milo Z, Days Of Wild, Musclefunk, etc. (I had been using a silver Yamaha Custom F1 neck, but the intonation wasn’t quite right) A selmer Paris neck with a little Dent in it was lying on the work bench, so asked for it and the guys looked each other and said to give them 50 bucks for it. $50 bucks for a selmer Paris neck! I was so excited & it was all the cash I had on me from busking earlier that day, so I handed the cash over and took the neck to Jon Baltimore’s shop where they did a fine job of removing the dent, cleaning it up, and fitting it to the selmer USA for about $75 bucks if I recall correctly? This sax has played smooth like Butta ever since.
