still thinking about this honestly. thinking about going to the dollar store together, getting some small stuff you needed to stock up on, looking around to see if you spot something you want for your hobbies or deco or whatever.
you walk through the clothing isle, Phil remembers how you mentioned you needed a new jacket - so he looks out for one you might like. he points one out, it's on sale even (he started checking for that too, ever since you started shopping together) - but you block off. you tell him you really can't buy a jacket right now, it's not in your budget. so of course he just offers to buy it for you - but you keep saying no you dont want it. hes genuinely confused, asking you why you don't want it, you said you need a new jacket. do you not like it? do you want a different one? the discussion goes and goes until he gives in, even if it doesn't sit right with him.
walking past the toy isle you spot the stuffed animals; an adorable sheep plush catching your eye. you walk over and pick it up, calling his name to make him look, smiling as you hold up the plush. "look at how cute it is! it's so soft!" you giggle as he makes his way over to you, smiling. he pats its head, nodding in agreement. that smile fades quickly when he sees you check the price tag and put it back without another word, walking on. He picks it back up and checks the price tag too, brows furrowing. he blinks at you, confused.
"Doll," he calls after you, "don't you want it?"
"No." you say in a casual tone, glancing back at him briefly.
"I can get it for you." you pause and shake your head.
it goes back and forth for a while before he gives in, putting it on the shelf. he's confused as to why you don't even want it when he pays for it, it's not expensive at all and he'd absolutely spend the money on you; even if it was a thousand bucks. the thought won't leave him alone and he knows he won't sleep well tonight if he just let's this go.
so what does he do? when loading the things into the car he tells you he's gotta pee and goes back into the store to use their toilet. what he actually does is get the little sheep for you, smiling brightly when he climbs into the car and hands it to you. you stare at him in confusion, asking why he got it. he looks at you like you've grown 3 heads.
"I said I didn't want it." you try to not sound ungrateful, your tone still making him frown. you sound like he just did something bad and he doesn't understand it. he just wanted to make you happy and now you're not even looking at the little thing. the car ride home is quiet, a thick tension is in the air; he actually starts feeling bad for buying it for you. even more so when you retreat to the bedroom of your shared apartment, leaving him alone in the living room. He keeps the sheep on his lap, anxiously playing with its fur. he wants to talk to you, ask what the hell he did wrong, why you're upset with him, if he should bring it back - but his thoughts are broken up by the bedroom door opening. you slip out, without a word slipping onto the couch next to him and leaning into him. Phil hesitates for just a moment before putting his arm around you, pulling you into his side.
"you okay?" he asks softly, you nod. a moment of silence passes before you speak again.
