The more you say ‘i love you’ the less it means. Or maybe that’s a cynical way of looking at things and what we feel is bigger than words. Either way, I’ve spent most of my life believing the former, so why stop now? etc etc then comes the very emotional verse
i've heard you say this. i don't remember the song since i only heard it once, but i do remember that intro. and i think you're right in some sense. but i wasn't trying to convey that saying "i love you" more makes it mean less, because i don't think it does.
i meant to say that it may not hit the recipient of the phrase with as much power as it does when it isn't said all the time. actually, it might just hit them with just as much power, but maybe people get used to it and build a tolerance, i suppose. they don't perceive it as strongly, but the strength of the phrase is still there. it is bigger than words, and that's why some people feel the need to say it a lot.
the repetitions are attempts to convey the magnitude of the feeling. attempts to fill an incredibly huge void with words, even though it can't be done, because like you said, it's just too big for words. way too big. so it's repeated infinitely throughout history, by people who love each other, in an attempt to show just how big the feeling is. it's far too big for words, but people try anyway. that's how powerful the feeling is. and as long as it's genuine when it's said, it doesn't matter how many times you say it, it's still immensely powerful. even if you forget to think about that power after hearing it a lot.
i don't know, maybe i rambled a bit. it makes me happy whenever someone says it to me. perhaps that's because i don't hear it enough, but personally, i think i do. luckily.
ah.
