what do you reckon it would take to get bill to sub ?
Sorry if this comes across as horny? I'm actually not sorry but that's just not the intended tone here I'm just pondering him and his love of control and having as much as possible, and you seem like you'd have opinions
i largely don't engage with sub!bill content so i haven't thought that much about it. this is more due to negative fandom experiences rather than an honest dislike of it, though, since i have read good fics that feature it and have had fun conversations with my friends about it. it's just that in my experience sub!bill is most often featured along side other tropes i really don't like so my reference material is slim.
i say all that to make clear i'm not a sub!bill scholar and this reply has been difficult to formulate. i'm also no bdsm theorist either, which made it doubly difficult to capture my feelings and express them in the way i want them to be received.
ultimately, i don't think it takes that much to make bill sub, depending on the context he's in. like... it's right there in the anatomy diagram:
power and control are important to bill because, in my opinion, bill's number one motivator is safety. he doesn't want to be victimized again, he doesn't want to his perception of the world denied again, he doesn't want to be abused again, so he eeks out as much power and control as he can in order to put up as many walls as possible and for him to feel like he can effectively wiggle out of any corner he's backed into.
submissives are not without power or control, quite the contrary. so being a sub isn't outside bill's comfort zone.
i think what's most important are 1. what the initiating context looks like and 2. that everyone involved knows their place. if bill gets a whiff of someone trying to get one over on him or getting too big for their britches it's over. it has to be clear he's the one in charge and that his partner knows their position of domination over him is smoke and mirrors for his pleasure and can end at any time (or is a gift he's bestowing on them and can withhold, or some other evasive bullshit).
i think people conceptualize the submissive partner as being in a more vulnerable or intimate position (or that they're the bottom). neither of those are inherently true and the conflation makes the question feel loaded and difficult to answer.
if you're asking "what would it take for him to temporarily give someone else the illusion of power/control in order to engage in a sexually pleasurable experience" then my answer is not much, so long as the stage is properly set and everyone's hitting their cues.
like, this comic really is the vibe, you know?
bill needs kink negotiation and a BDSM contract but i don't think he'd ever actually engage in either except as a bit, because doing so genuinely would require a level of honesty, vulnerability, and trust he's not gonna just do. so he's doing it in this round about 5D chess way.
it's all just another thing he's doing for fun, another game he's playing, another role he's filling, another way he can get into someone else's head. and whether it's true or it's just what he tells himself...well...
now when it comes to sub!bill in billford specifically i think there are a few other caveats, but this is how i feel generally speaking.
