MEMORIES OF RAGNAROK ONLINE // having a nostalgia moment So yesterday, I was doing some studying to the Ragnarok Online soundtrack, which put me on an epic trip of nostalgia. For those of you who don't remember, Ragnarok Online was a sprite-based anime style and heavily grindy Korean MMORPG back in the early to late 2000's. I played it heavily from 2004-2008, logging hundreds of hours. Ragnarok accomplished with mediocre means what games with millions more in budget and billions more in pixels fail to accomplish. That is, create an immersive and inviting alternate world. One that is populated by beautiful cities, wonderful characters, and incredible gear. It created an amazing sense of... Atmosphere. It's certainly the closest I ever came to being in love with a game world. These days, I balk at the concept of committing the time or the energy to get this level of immersion out of a game. That time has passed, and life has taken over, leaving only time for a few rounds of Deathmatch between dinner and bed time. But I'll always remember with fondness the only multiplayer game world that transported me to another world. Ragnarok Online.
