Stray Leaguers Midnight Musings Part 6
Alright I just need to get something off my chest...Gray Link needs some Happy. If he had personally met Top Joy before becoming a stray leaguer I'm sure that he and his team wouldn't have ended up with the Prince of Darkness. Now I mentioned that writing this up gave me cuddle ideas; I'll elaborate at the end of the musing. Lets not waste anymore time and dive into the next stray leaguer.
Gray Link.
Much like the Deus volleyball leaguers, Gray Link and his team were built as 'prototype' leaguers by Dark. Since the 'spring leg' models such as Top Joy were successful they tried to take it another step further. Unfortunately doing so Dark found that the leaguers' endurance dropped as they had less armor than normal basketball leaguer models. Their spring limbs had to be made of a flexible metal which didn't have the same strength. This lead to less resistance to 'rough play' since the spring limbs were more likely to be damaged or torn on the field.
Seeing this they decided to scrap the project, some like Geraba were sent to areas where Dark was loosing interest and wouldn't care about the lose of one or two leaguers. Gray Link and his team were instead scheduled for 'reclamation'.
(Reclamation is a term I use in my Iron Leaguer fanfic for when leaguers/iron soldiers are deemed useless and melted down to create more useful mechs. Yes, it is quite horrible to consider that any mech in the leaguer universe could be sent to be 'reclaimed'.)
Up to this point Gray Link and his team were trying to get better to try and find ways around or to compensate for their weaknesses. Since they were only prototype leaguers they weren't allowed to play in any official league games on confined away from the other leaguers. This isolation was suffocating and only caused the group to become more frustrated with each other, until Gray Link couldn't take it anymore.
After their normal practice session he managed to sneak out with only one thing on his mind, going to where he should be; the basketball stadium. There he found a game in progress, Dark's basketball team, the Dark Jugglers, were playing against a smaller team. Even if he couldn't join Gray Link wanted to watch and imagine that it was him down there playing.
Watching he notice a basketball leaguer very much like himself, Top Joy. Though a slightly older model the leaguer was playing despite his weaker armor. Even within his own team Gray Link had no friends, everyone in his group was basically looking out for themselves. Never establishing friendship kept them from caring about each other. Seeing the cheerful Top Joy he could help wondering if he could possibly be a friend. It was a comforting thought and gave hope that one day Gray Link would be able to play on the same court. But it was never meant to be as he learned shortly after that they would be reclaimed.
Managing to escape Gray Link became bitter, not sure at Dark but at the basketball leaguer he had seen playing. Even though he had never met him nor knew his name Gray was envious and vowed that he would one day find that leaguer to make him pay. Not knowing the Prince of Darkness' connection to Dark Gray and his team gladly joined to cause inflict pain on leaguer who thought themselves better than them.
Gray Link had the same love for his sport and only wanted to play the same way Top Joy was able to. Perhaps if they had been team mates Top Joy would have found a friend in Gray and gave him the happiness of friendship he needed. Behind his smug, unforgiving and ruthless persona is a leaguer who just wants to be happy.
While researching for this I re-watched episode 40. Oh, my imagination had a field day giving Gray Link's perception on the situation.
