DAY THREE: Gray Spaces ● Enemies and Rivalries ● Fealty Not everything fits into neat categories, and some relationships defy expectations. Sometimes an impactful relationship is not a positive one, but rather a contentious rivalry or an epic conflict between bitter enemies. And in feudal societies like Noldorin Beleriand, the bond between a vassal and their liege is complicated beyond simple categorization. This is a day for celebrating the relationships that don’t quite fit elsewhere, the ones living in the gray spaces between black and white definitions, and the ones that may take a darker turn.

life got cruel for me this month so i was unable to complete 3 of works i’d planned for tolkien gen week. i have started both ‘diversity’ and ‘group dynamic’ and had no energy and time to finish, and also i thought i would have nothing for ‘gray spaces’, again, but i remembered that my favourite of the fanfics i wrote perfectly fits the topic! so i’m reminding you about “Oath”.

this is exactly why i love gigolas so much - that in lotr canon their relationship changes and with every step it is more complicated and entangled, and by no means is it romantic. 

it appears obvious that they love each other - care for each other deeply, want the best for each other and feel safe when together (“yet you comfort me”). depending on an interpretation, you can argue if in the narrative they ever reach the level of a purely romantic relationship, but the most of their being together is a stretch of gray spaces. i love them, because - both being extremely vivid, identifiable, skilled, distinct and heroic characters - together they are undefinable. 

the gray space that is explored in this fanfic is the very beginning of their time together - when the Fellowship is leaving from Rivendell; before they make the effort to trust each other and appear extremely weird for each other.

A closet turned modern chic space saving office nook reveal

Well it’s summer time and the last thing we should be thinking about is work work work work work.. Well the truth is, we need a desk space year round over here and opening a wall from the living room into our new office/ lounge (aka the place the kids love to play video games) space was our best idea yet!
