Ava:
Connor, hey, it's me, Ava Tyler. I'm not sure if you remember this happening, but three weeks ago, my firm hired yours for a specific project. Now, I've yet to see any development on this project, or any proof at all that the money I'm paying you isn't going towards getting you drunk every Saturday night so please have some kind of official looking document on my desk by Monday that shows me that you at least pretend to care, or I will not only have you fired and blackilsted in this city, I will have you castrated.
Grayler “You should see the other guy.”
Was he being serious? Ava couldn't believe half the shit that came out of Connor's mouth sometimes, but even though she was used to feeling like tearing her hair out when her husband provided her with his reasons for why he did things, that didn't mean he was any less irritating. "That is really great logic, Connor, really. I'm so glad you can sit here and tell your wife that it doesn't matter you've got a busted lip and a black eye starting to form, not to mention your knuckles are bleeding. It's okay that you wince whenever your two-year-old daughter tries to sit on you, because at least you have it better than the other guy. Yeah, okay."
"Friends don't look at each other like that." Grayler
"I don't know what you're talking about, but I guess now I'm just gonna have to stop looking at you, Connor."
Grayler ☎: for a voicemail not meant for you
Hey Maddy, I'm so sorry I'm calling so late. Babe, I didn't want to do this over the phone but I just wanted to talk to you. Your brother is really cut up about this whole Julian thing, and I just think you should talk to him. I know you, I know him, and you know what, I know Ben, too, okay. These guys, they love you so much. They want you to be happy, I just don't think they understand that you are. Be patient, you'll get through to them, I promise. But remember, they're looking out for you. Their hearts are in the right place.
grayler "Did I even mean anything to you?"
"Where is this coming from?"
They were fine, two days ago, Ava thinks, remembering how they had bickered all the way to a gelato stand on West 4th Ave, after getting lunch at that dosa stand. She remembers, because that date has broken into all of her thoughts, thrown her focus off of work, and made her smile like an idiot at the oddest of times. Connor Grant of all people is making her heart feel so light she could fly.
"I don't know what you want me to say, Connor, because quite frankly we haven't had the easiest relationship but... You do mean something to me. Did I do something? Did Ben say something?"
"Can you keep it down I'm trying to sleep." Grayler
"Oh, I'm sorry, am I inconveniencing you while I'm doing work in my own bedroom?" Ava asks, looking up from her computer to the bed, where Connor is. He's got a pillow over his face, but then he moves it to sit up and face her.
"Yes."
"Too bad, babe," she shakes her head, turning back to the open Word doc. There are lists to be made, seating arrangements to be double-checked, numbers to go over. She's running out of time, but the stress only spurs her into action. She's too awake to go to bed.
Before she realizes, Connor is leaning over the back of her chair and peering at the screen. "Need some help with that?"
"No, I can do my work myself thank you very much."
"Yeah well I can't just fall asleep when you're not working, so tough shit."
"Connor..."
"Listen, Ave, either I help you finish this tonight, or you come to bed right now and I can wake you up at five am. But those are your only two options."
It's sweet, she thinks, how he's trying to be gruff when there's really something good underneath it all. "Alright," she agrees, closing the lid of her computer. "Let's go to bed."
