John Constantine preferred to rely on paying clients rather than capromacy to get his bills paid. It didn’t always work, but he did his best. Though since he found himself in this area of the country due to reasons unrelated to clients, he figured he would have some problems making ends meet. Then luck turned in his favor when he stopped at a rather seedy place for a drink.
It wasn’t his typical kind of client, but he wasn’t too picky. The guy had cash and wanted him to check out a lake that he had a nice cottage on. There were all sorts of rumors surrounding the lake. Weird sightings of something in the lake, people going missing. The kinds of stories that he’d heard before. There must have been enough truth to it for people to get spooked enough that the guy couldn’t sell the place.
John figured the guy would have given him the cash just for the seal of approval, but as it turned out he seemed to have a bit of integrity left. Who knew? John himself was surprised when he agreed to take the job with the intention of actually checking things out. He made his way up to the house by the lake with his bag and only half the agreed upon fee. The other half he would get when he finished the job. He was vaguely concerned he’d caught something from the heroes he’d encountered, hopefully it wasn’t terminal.
He left his bag on the porch of the house and lit a cigarette as he walked down to the lake. If nothing was amiss it would be readily apparent. If something was here there was a small chance it wasn’t all bad. He knew a guy that kept himself in a worse place than this who was a decent, if vegetative bloke.
Something broke the calm surface of the lake and John ground his teeth together. Just perfect, he thought frowning in irritation. Worse than a lake monster it’s a person. Probably one of those highly irritating magic is shite people. He did his best to force a smile. His long tan coat, slacks, shirt, tie, and shoes weren’t exactly swimwear.
