The day of the full moon, Bruce catches Matt in his bedroom with the door open. Matt is taking some crystals out of the drawer by his bed. He’s laying them out on the bedspread, running his fingers over each of them as he goes. Bruce knocks on the open door of Matt’s room even though Matt probably heard him coming. Matt nods to him and he comes in, sits at Matt’s desk. He watches as Matt takes another crystal out, sets it next to the others that look almost identical in color. Bruce asks, “What’re those for?” Matt runs his finger over the one he’s just put down. “Few different things. This one absorbs bad energy.” He points to another, “This one puts out good energy.” Another, “This one brings luck.” Scooting closer on the chair, Bruce asks, “How’d you learn all this?” Matt doesn’t look up from his crystals as he shrugs. “Internet. Books.” Bruce puts out a hand and stops himself just short of touching a pale pink crystal. “So is their purpose open to interpretation or…?” “Mostly.” Matt sits down by the headboard, careful not to knock the crystals over. “I just read however much I could then chose their meaning.” “You chose their meaning?” Bruce’s brow furrows. “Does that… work? Does that make them work?” “Kind of.” “What’s that mean?” He wonders if he’s being ignorant for a second. Should he know more about crystals? He’s not sure. In any case, Matt doesn’t seem offended. He just answers, “It’s… It’s really more about belief than making them work.” “So are they like… your religion?” Matt seems on the verge of a smile. “No. Not really. It may sound like it, but. No. lt’s about believing in something that… well. That you can’t see.” Bruce almost laughs. “You mean how people believe in you when they can’t see you?” “Yeah. Or how you’re just a myth most times.” He wasn’t sure if that’s a joke or not but he still smiles. He watches as Matt smiles back, a secret sort of smile, softening his whole face. Bruce feels a sort of awe wash over him at the sight. Matt is… pretty. Bruce gulps down his feelings. Repeats, “So it’s about belief.” Matt is still smiling as he shrugs. “Why not, right? I figured that as long as I’m… this, I might as well.” “Might as well?” “Believe in everything I can. If faeries and ghosts can exist, why can’t rocks bring luck?” Nodding, Bruce leans back in his chair. “I like your logic.” Matt huffs out a laugh. “Thanks.” In his mind, Bruce makes a mental note that asking about Matt’s crystals makes him happy. He’s not sure why he wants to make Matt smile, but he just really, really does.
