diabolicalchild *doing work on laptops in science* Her: ugh what should we do *look at each other* "TUMBLR!"
Seriously all my classes are so wonderful
they are super interesting and makes me want to be a public health major or something along those lines.
My health consumerism class talks about health care providers, facilities, laws, insurance, what kind of care is available for different income levels, controversies, etc.
My family development class talks about everything from sexuality and gender roles to family dynamics and different types of families (blood related and non-blood-related).
My medical nutrition therapy class talks about sports nutrition and providing nutrition and advice to athletes and providing nutritional information to different disease conditions and talking about eating disorders.
My global health class talks about different people all over the world (and not just AMerica and does not use America as a model) and the different world wide health issues and talks about racism, elitism, etc and of course different health care. My professor's interest is in Women's health too so I DEFINITELY love that.
And of course my Mibo class talks about and covers different microbial diseases and how to diagnose certain people with different microbial and viral diseases and how to test for those
I am loving all my classes. It's hard of course because some of these are upper level and they take up a lot of my time (along with that taking care of a dog and going to work and being exhausted from that), but its so incredibly interesting :) especially if you have professors who acknowledge that YES racism does exist and certain ethnic groups are treated differently as well as how lower income families are DIFFERENT and basically live in a DIFFERENT WORLD AND HAVE DIFFERENT ACCESS than say middle class to upper middle class and even the wealthy.
I think i have an increase amount of interest in these areas because of Tumblr and the woc feminists and womanists and people who introduced me to all these issues that are out there. It makes me want to do something in the public health sector with ethnic/poc and women's health.
Two more weeks.
Two more weeks and this fine semester is over. I will miss it. Two more weeks left of my junior year… Where did time go?
My Favorite Class
At Penn State, there is no shortage of classes one can take. We all had our required major and support of major courses to take. Being an Accounting major, I had to find some fun classes to take to keep me awake all day. Of course, after my freshman year, I did everything to avoid the 8 am classes and any Friday classes.
Some of the interesting classes I took were LArch 60 (which I appreciate more now that I get to enjoy Central Park), Comm 100 (movie watching class), Mental Preparation for Golf (yes that is a class and is taught by the awesome Penn State Sports Psychologist Dr. Yukelson), another golf class that ended with a trip to Kiawah, and ballroom dancing ( I got a C).
Of all these classes, my favorite was BA 441 taught by Professor Jeff Sharp. BA 441 was an intro business law class and dealt with all sorts of issues including credit card rights, Uniform Commercial Code, etc. While the topics were interesting to learn about, Professor Sharp made the class. The class was a hour and fifteen minutes, so the first fifteen minutes were devoted to a college football discussion and the best of the Daily Collegian Police Blotter. Professor Sharp would run down the best of the upcoming college football games and give his picks for each and always ended with his Penn State prediction. Being a huge football fan, I of course loved this part of class. Over the course of that semester, I got to know Professor Sharp more and more and he gave me great life advice and helped me when I needed legal advice.
Mark Emmert and the NCAA can say what they want about Penn State's culture, but we know the real Penn State. As you can see, and probably experienced, there is no shortage of classes and majors, which is one of the reasons I selected Penn State. How many universities can offer all these classes and ensuring top-notch students leave with a phenomenal education? Not many and that is why We Are!
What was your favorite class or professor at Penn State?
