Falun Mine, Sweden (No. 15)

Falu mine is a former copper mine located about one kilometre southwest of Falun's central parts. Mining possibly began as early as e.Kr 800 (possibly the beginning of the 8th century) and ended in 1992. During its heyday, the mine was one of Sweden's largest mines and has been a World Heritage Sitesince 2001. In addition to copper, sulfide ores, zinc, lead, bismuth, silver and gold have also been mined in the mine.

Falu mine was its own mountain battle and mountain mastery, Stora Kopparbergets bergslag, until Bergskollegium was decommissioned. Until then, criminal proceedings were settled in the Mining Court.

Archaeological and geological surveys have shown that the mine began to be mined between the years 850 and 1080. Spectral analyses of bronze objects on Gotland have shown that copper was probably taken from the Falu deposit as early as the 9th-9th century. By the time the mine first appeared in written documents in 1288, it had already become a national interest. The work was carried out in a kind of company where shares in the mine could be bought and sold. The first known privileges were given to the copper mountain by King Magnus Eriksson in 1347 and during the Middle Ages the mine contributed two-thirds of Europe's copper production. However, it was during the 17th century that mining gained its greatest extent, as Sweden was a great power. The peak of production occurred around 1650. At times, 2/3 of the world's copper ore was mined in Falun, and during the 17th century the mine with about 1,000 workers was Sweden's largest workplace.The mine was called Tiskasjöbergin the Middle Ages. 

When a 500-foot deep sinking was emptied in 1719, the Martian skin mine, which for many years had been under water, was found there the body of the miner Mats Israelsson, commonly referred to as Fet-Mats, who 42 years earlier had gone alone into thin and then died. At the time of admission, the vitriol-containing water through the body was still soft. He then became hard as stone and was kept for many years as a great curiosity, but began to disintegrate and was then buried with much honour in Stora Kopparberg Church in 1749. Rest did not last long; you had to re-build the church floor and had to move Fet-Mats. His legs were put in a box that was moved up in the attic where he was forgotten. In the 1930s, the box with Mats was found when the attic was made and he received his funeral in 1934.

As the last buckle on a six inch leather ball stretcher was fixed I knew my fate was sealed. I wasn’t sure how long I’d been strung up on the cross, impaled by an equine phallus, but I felt the warmth of the early morning sun on my face. The earliest evidence of cold-hammering of native copper comes from the excavation at Çayönü Tepesi in eastern Anatolia, which dates between 7200 to 6600 BCE. Among the various items considered to be votive or amulets there was one that looked like a fishhook and one like an awl. Another find, at Shanidar Cave in Mergasur, Iraq, contained copper beads, dates to 8,700 BCE.

One of the world's oldest known copper mines, as opposed to usage of surface deposits, is at Timna Valley, Israel, since the fourth millennium BC, with surface deposit usage since the sixth to fifth millennium.

The Pločnik archaeological site in southeastern Europe (Serbia) contains the oldest securely dated evidence of copper making at high temperature, from 5,000 BCE. The find in June 2010 extends for additional 500 years the earlier record of copper smelting from Rudna Glava (Serbia), dated to 5th millennium BCE.

Copper smelting technology gave rise to the Copper Age, aka Chalcolithic Age, and then the Bronze Age. The Bronze Age would not have been possible without humans developing smelting technology.

Copper extraction refers to the methods used to obtain copper from its ores. The conversion of copper consists of a series of physical and electrochemical processes. Methods have evolved and vary with country depending on the ore source, local environmental regulations, and other factors.

As in all mining operations, the ore must usually be beneficiated (concentrated). The processing techniques depend on the nature of the ore. If the ore is primarily sulfide copper minerals (such as chalcopyrite), the ore is crushed and ground to liberate the valuable minerals from the waste ('gangue') minerals. It is then concentrated using mineral flotation. The concentrate is typically then sold to distant smelters, although some large mines have smelters located nearby. Such colocation of mines and smelters was more typical in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when smaller smelters could be economic. The sulfide concentrates are typically smelted in such furnaces as the Outokumpu or Inco flash furnace or the ISASMELT furnace to produce matte, which must be converted and refined to produce anode copper. Finally, the final refining process is electrolysis. For economic and environmental reasons, many of the byproducts of extraction are reclaimed. Sulfur dioxide gas, for example, is captured and turned into sulfuric acid — which can then be used in the extraction process or sold for such purposes as fertiliser manufacture.

Oxidised copper ores can be treated by hydrometallurgical extraction.

Falun Mine, Sweden (No. 11)

Another tale is about the red paint that decorates so many houses in this region; it exists thanks to the Falun Mine. The iron ochre from the mine has been used since the 17th century and is regarded as the paint that gave Sweden its colour. 

 Apart from the mine, there is much more to experience at the Falun World Heritage Site, which includes the mine, the town, the master miners' landscape, flower gardens, and beautiful mansions. The well-preserved district of Elsborg with its wooden buildings makes for an attractive walk from the centre of Falun to the mine.
