“--Huh!?” Crap, that’s not good. Quickly, Yuji moves to Hinata’s side, guiding him over to a nearby bench to sit down. The word again flying right over his head as he focuses on making sure that the other doesn’t pass out on him.
“Want me to go get you some water? Or something to eat?” Frantically looking around, Yuji spots a convenience store not far down the street. “Just stay right here, okay? I’ll be quick.”
And without giving the other boy any time to protest, he’s already speeding towards the convenience store. A cloud of dust trailing behind him.
💞 for tsukki!
for the record, tsukishima has more patience than people give him credit for. just because he doesn’t walk around with a phony smile. just because he doesn’t pretend he isn’t annoyed when his company is being annoying. he doesn’t try to pretend anything, though he’ll admit he doesn’t try to overreact to things, either. tsukishima just knows what he respects & what he doesn’t. & he maintains the standards he holds.
that being said - most of the time, he knows the general impression of him is that he’s got a stick up his ass. that’s fine & well. he’s patient enough to think that’s well & fine. patient enough until some people like . . . well, like hinata . . . make it a game. & of course, hinata doesn’t even have to try, doesn’t even have to have any intention of starting the game to already take them to level ten.
it’s bad enough that that hinata manages to get him to play, but it’s worse that tsukishima deeply doesn’t want to lose. he hates losing, & he loses so often — but a lot of the time, it seems inevitable.
sometimes, it’s because he made a promise to himself. that he would achieve something, & he only reached a fraction of the height he said he would.
sometimes, it’s because hinata is so . . . unsurmountable. the number of times he’s heard hinata describe himself as flying is irritating, but it’s — true. as far as tsukishima can tell, hinata is ready to touch the sun without being burned. no one should be able to do that, but . . . hinata is managing.
still, tsukishima is reluctant to lose. even to the sun.
maybe it’s for this reason that that tsukishima is so ready to argue with hinata right now, as they walk vaguely (?) in the same direction. he tells him off for nothing, calls him short, & then huffs while he throws his headphones over his ears. it’s nothing unusual. tsukishima tells himself it’s only because he’s frustrated at hinata’s academic performance. hinata is stupid, sure. but he’s not stupid. he’s smart stupid, you know? & he could do a lot better in academics under the right circumstances.
they pass by a bench at a bus stop. hinata is frustrated enough to climb atop the bench so he can prod at tsukishima’s chest. the taller of the two is dimly aware of the fact that hinata’s bike is precariously leaning against the bus stop sign. tsukishima frowns.
‘ i don’t know why, ‘ he begins. ‘ you have so much to say. it’s not as though there’s that much variety in your day to day. ‘ tsukishima feels confident saying that much, if only because he knows that he himself doesn’t have much variety in his daily routine.
hinata opens his mouth to retort, so tsukishima does what is natural — he claps his hand over hinata’s mouth. brown eyes widen, & tsukishima feels a moment of childish triumph. triumph that fades not with the expected lick that seems inevitable from someone like hinata . . . but with a kiss to his palm.
tsukishima pulls his hand back as though it were burned. it feels like it had been burned. ‘ you weren’t supposed to do that, ‘ tsukishima complains before he can stop himself.
‘ you weren’t supposed to be a jerk - ‘ hinata counters. tsukishima can’t argue with that, but even so . . . he tugs his hand close to him & shoves it into his pocket because it still burns.
‘ no one thinks to react that way- ‘ tsukishima complains regardless & nurses his hand. beyond the fact that it is an unusual reaction, it’s just weird. because it was so gentle, it was so ? uncommon for the way that they’ve interacted.
& because he’s still so damned confused, he leans forward to where hinata stands on the bench before him & kisses him. it’s chaste, earnest, dry — nothing more than a peck, & even while his lips touch hinata’s . . . his cheeks run red because this had to be a moment of weakness. & beyond that — no one knew that he was the way he was — & . . . still, he can’t regret having stood before the sun.
‘ god, have you ever heard of chapstick ? ‘ tsukishima tries to deflect, still pink. all of this . . . keeps getting weirder. dammit.
