Thanks to Pom Pom Squad for alerting me to this band with their cover of Crimson and Clover. This best of will give you whiplash—Tommy James & the Shondells had so many different styles and it doesn’t go chronologically, so you’ve got bubblegum cheek-by-jowl with psychedelia. Nothing on it grabs me as much as Crimson and Clover does yet, but it’s a good listen nonetheless. Look what got here just in time for #tapethemethursday ! I’ve been wanting a Walkman-type device for years, hoping one would manifest at a thrift store or garage sale or similar… this summer I finally got sick of waiting and bought one off eBay. Behold my new not-Walkman Personal Stereo! I was hoping for something with cool vintage metal-looking design, but that seems to add a lot of dollars to the price—I get it, we all love an aesthetic. I wound up picking this because it has EQ (which works pretty well!) and a vintage enough vibe. It sounds better than I was expecting. It’s got a constant “rrrrrr” noise anytime the motor is on, but it’s only noticeable between songs. As for the Who tape, pretty good! I’ll say about it what I say about most Who compilations: needs more early stuff. Little Can’t Explain, I’m a Boy, Kids Are Alright… and the inclusion of My Wife is incomprehensible.
