Some Warren Zevon for #tapethemethursday by @vinyl_sauce ! This isn’t his best album, but it is a knockout worthy of Boom Boom Mancini, and like most of his albums features subtle contributions from a who’s who of other famous artists: his backup band throughout is REM minus Michael Stipe (who does drop in to contribute some backup vocals), and as one-offs on various tracks, you’ve got Neil Young playing lead guitar, Bob Dylan playing harmonica, Flea on bass, Don Henley, Brian Setzer, Jennifer Warnes… honestly the recording studio on any Zevon album must have been a madhouse. Look what got here just in time for #tapethemethursday ! I’ve been wanting a Walkman-type device for years, hoping one would manifest at a thrift store or garage sale or similar… this summer I finally got sick of waiting and bought one off eBay. Behold my new not-Walkman Personal Stereo! I was hoping for something with cool vintage metal-looking design, but that seems to add a lot of dollars to the price—I get it, we all love an aesthetic. I wound up picking this because it has EQ (which works pretty well!) and a vintage enough vibe. It sounds better than I was expecting. It’s got a constant “rrrrrr” noise anytime the motor is on, but it’s only noticeable between songs. As for the Who tape, pretty good! I’ll say about it what I say about most Who compilations: needs more early stuff. Little Can’t Explain, I’m a Boy, Kids Are Alright… and the inclusion of My Wife is incomprehensible. Beck Hansen’s debut for #tapethursday / #tapethemethursday by @vinyl_sauce ! Listening today, I’m impressed by how *himself* Beck already was at such a young age.
