          ╳ ┊ u l t i m a t e  »  Nightmares were nothing new to the Ultimate lifeform. In fact, Shadow thought he had learned to handle them just fine.. because those awful images of people dying around him was just his mind playing tricks on him. It wasn’t real so it’s fine. It’s fine..

          —Were these noises coming from him? That piercing scream followed by loud, panicked breathing and hands grasping at pillows before someone turned the lights on and pulled him close. He winced, unable to focus on anything at first. It was still so dark outside.. “... R.. rouge?” His voice was breathless, but he finally managed to utter out her name. For a moment Shadow felt relieved ( he knew he could trust her ) but then another awful feeling washed over him. This was embarrassing. How could he let someone see him in this state? The hedgehog let out a shaky sigh, trying to find the right words.. but he didn’t know how to explain himself.

A gentle huff passed the echidna’s lips at the other’s statement. Use to the bat’s constant teasing and antics whenever she was around, it seemed to be her favorite pastime when he was involved. Getting a rise out of him more than most, she just seemed to have that effect on him at times.

Even if he wasn’t sure what to call the relationship they had — friends, allies, acquaintances? Whatever the case with them, he didn’t mind her presence too much at times.

“...what do I owe this visit? Let me guess, yer ‘ere for yer ‘true love’?”

Jabbing a thumb over his shoulder and in the direction of the Master Emerald behind him. After all, the giant gem was usually the reason she stopped by every so often.

“Surely, there’s more shady places than this, right?” Sole asked, tilting her head to the bat, before adjusting her coat and letting out a sigh to herself. “But either way, the information I want is in this area, so I can’t exactly turn around and back out now.”

“...” shadow was silent, staring across at rouge the bat as she eyed him. she had asked him out here, and it had sounded urgent. well, urgent enough for rouge. shadow glanced around, noting the people side-eyeing him as they walked by where he and she were sat at the outdoor tables of the cafe. the government may have pardoned shadow for his actions with the ARK (albeit with heavy surveillance and many conditions to his ‘freedom’) -- no doubt in small part to sonic’s help & testimony on shadow’s behalf during the trials --- but that didn’t mean the people of station square were so readily able to forgive or forget.

he cleared his throat, glancing down towards that iced soda he had ordered. he idly stirred the ice with that green coloured straw, watching the way the flavour shots mixed in with the clear coloured soda.

“well? what did you want to discuss?”

     He’s gonna do that girl in one of these days, he swears. His unseen ears were three seconds away from comically shooting out steam like a tea kettle, lip curled in the most unsightly of ways at the other’s smallest of comments, sharpened teeth flashing time and time again. People just couldn’t take a hint.

     “Close, but no cigar. Y'drive me CRAZY.” ..A beat. “And NOT in the way you're thinking either! As in up the wall! Mad! Loony! Which is all synonymous for LEAVE ME ALONE! The overarching message you NEVER. SEEM. TO GET!” Anger. Violent anger. Red-hot rage that makes the mind go hazy. Steps march off with fists clenched tight and unmoving by either of his sides, only for... that fire in his chest to dim, sigh puffing out as soon as he began to leave. Why did he even bother trying to walk away? He knew the girl was just gonna follow him anyways and pester him further. 

     Ugh... His body just keeps on walking. Where to? He didn’t know. But if he stood still for too long with this chick around, there’d be a hole burned through the center of Angel Island sooner than later, and he didn’t need that on top of this. “This little song and dance we do? It’s gettin’ old quick, Rouge. You can’t just pop up here like it’s your personal home away from home. You’ve already seen the sights, you’ve received enough of me screaming at you to last a lifetime, and take a picture of the Master Emerald if it’ll keep you off of my island for longer stints of time. What else could you POSSIBLY keep comin’ up here for, huh?!”

❝ Hahahaha... ❞ Does he find her remark amusing, amidst everything? It's a twisted laugh, one resigned yet one that fractures the restraint he presents. Mephiles had never been good with group fights; he much preferred solo targets. Anything beyond that was more unpredictable, disorientating to work with. And unfortunately for him, Team Dark were a unit as much as they were the bane of his existence. He tries to prop himself up, looking up with a sharp gleam in his eyes. She can laugh now. She won't be laughing later. ❝ You'd best pray they come back soon, bat. ❞
