Happy Islamic New Year Everyone 🌑❤️ Islamic New Year is coming up, and it’s considered the second holiest day in the Muslim calendar after Ramadan. Since the Islamic calendar is lunar, the dates changes every year, and Islamic New Year falls on the first day of Muharram – the first month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims have a different name to the West for their New Year. While we consider this year to be 2018 AD, when Muharram happens this year it will be 1440 AH (Anno Hegirae). Anno Hegirae is known as the year of the Hijra – when the Prophet Muhammad emigrated from Mecca to Medina. Many Muslims take the time to fast as they might during Eid al-Fitr. Muharram is also the anniversary of the battle of Karbala, when the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussein ibn Ali, was killed.
