RIP Greedy Smith, founder of Mental as Anything
Greedy Smith from Mental as Anything passed away last night.
Feeling sad. Of all the legendary bands from the 1980s Australian pub scene - and it was a time of a LOT of great pub bands - the Mentals were the most quirky and fun. They’d met at art school in the late ‘70s, and that showed through in a lot of ways. The perspective in the lyrics in most of their songs, and the look of their music videos, was always that bit different. I remember going to one of their gigs once when I was coming down with a bad cold. I felt twice as bad as I probably otherwise would have the next morning - but it was worth it.
Live it Up was their biggest hit, and probably the most mainstream song they ever released. It’s a really well crafted pop song, as well as being catchy and fun, and Greedy does the lead vocals on it.
