What's the blue yuri?
“Blue yuri” is the term coined by the Kinioto/The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All fandom to refer to these two sets of sketches by Sumiko, which she posted to her social media in January 2024. (Original links here and here)
The “+8” in the caption of the second compilation seems to indicate an 8-year timeskip.
Since both ladies look considerably worse for wear (Mitsuki is haggard and disheveled, while the tearful Aya has become a shadow of the upbeat gyaru we know and love), it is implied that their relationship suffered a severe rupture, and that they are only reunited in these doodles because they both happen to be attending “someone’s wedding.” Whether reconnection can plant the seeds of reconciliation is left to the audience’s conjecture.
Ever since Sumiko released this art, the fandom has been abuzz with speculation over whether she was simply indulging in an angsty AU…or if the despondent sketches foreshadow a falling-out that will lead to Aya and Mitsuki parting ways in canon. Therefore, any external impediments or internal struggles that threaten to drive a wedge between our girls are likely to prompt a flurry of anxious posts from readers about the threat of the doomed blue yuri becoming a reality.
