... because stability strongly correlates with survival and persistence of both individuals and groups.
Living systems constantly struggle against disintegration. In thermodynamic terms, they maintain internal order while exporting disorder into their environment, a process linked to increasing entropy. For an organism to keep functioning, it must regulate temperature, energy intake, social relations, and environmental threats. Stability is therefore not just psychologically comforting but structurally necessary for continued existence. Because humans are social organisms with complex cognition, the pursuit of stability becomes embedded in many layers of life.
Biological stability. At the most basic level, organisms maintain internal balance of temperature, glucose levels, hydration. The physiologist Walter Cannon called this principle homeostasis. Hunger, thirst, fatigue, and pain are signals pushing the organism back toward stable functioning.
Social stability. Human survival historically depended on group cooperation. Stable social structures such as families, tribes, institutions reduce unpredictable threats. Laws, norms, and moral systems often arise as mechanisms to limit destructive conflict within the group.
Economic stability. People work, save money, and build infrastructure largely to reduce uncertainty about food, shelter, and future survival. Much of civilization can be understood as an enormous attempt to stabilize the conditions of life.
Cognitive stability. Humans also seek stable interpretations of reality. Belief systems, scientific theories, and philosophical frameworks help reduce uncertainty by organizing experience into coherent models. Even moral systems can often be interpreted through this lens. Actions like cooperation, fairness, and trust tend to stabilize groups over long periods. This idea was strongly developed in evolutionary thinking after Charles Darwin, where social behaviors that improved group survival could spread through populations.
However, there is an interesting tension here. Humans do not pursue stability alone. They also pursue novelty, exploration, and change. Curiosity, ambition, artistic experimentation, and scientific discovery all disrupt existing stability to some degree. This is not a contradiction; it reflects another survival strategy. Too much rigidity can make a system fragile if conditions change. Exploration allows organisms and societies to adapt.
So human behavior often oscillates between two forces. They are stabilization as preserving order, safety, and continuity and exploration as seeking new possibilities that may improve survival under changing conditions. In complex systems theory, successful organisms tend to balance these two tendencies rather than maximizing one of them.
Many human actions can be traced back to the pursuit of stability. Much of culture, morality, and political organization can indeed be interpreted as attempts to extend the duration and resilience of human life structures, in other words, to keep the dance of entropy going for as long as possible.
