Anyone know any awesome green networks??
How can cities tackle climate change TODAY?
Hamburg, the 10th largest city in Europe, is aiming to answer that very question by creating the “Green Network” / “Grünes Netz”…
With a population of 1.8 million and the effect of climate change being felt throughout the city (rising temperatures of 1.2°C and sea levels by 20cm in the last 60 years) it is time for Hamburg to act NOW!
The visionary thinking for the “Green Network” is driven by city staff whose aim is for Hamburg to be a car-free city within 15-20 years. The 27 square mile network (half the size of Boston) will link car-free roads to parks and playgrounds, from the city centre to the suburbs. The vision is for a city that will still allow cars but the car will not be necessary for getting around. Instead city dwellers will be encouraged to hike, bike, swim and be surrounded by and interact with nature and wildlife. This fusion of urban life and nature is a positive step in moving towards a truly sustainable city and one which if we are to curtail global warming before it’s too late, needs to be adopted across the globe.
The Green Network will cover 40% of the city and will help to alleviate flooding and absorb the CO2 emissions which the current hustle and bustle of city life creates.
Now all they need is for the politicians to make the Green Network a priority…
