Uh oh, greenface! So no one in the movie mentions that this character is green. He's perceived to be "West Indian" and later (mild spoiler) it's revealed he has Addison's Disease which can affect skin pigmentation, but green? I assume it was supposed to look different under studio lights but who knows.

I loved the original Dark Crystal film very much, with all the depressing and cruel bits as well as the hilarious characters, exotic locales, and fantastic creatures. So I was thrilled when the Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance series came out. Of all the wonderful characters, the one that impressed me most was Deet - the most adorable, inclusive, supportive, peaceful character ever. Second would be the heretic. Painting her was really hard, or rather, drawing her was, to get everything right and maintain some portrait likeness.

Another great illustration of Thomas Potter Cooke as the Monster in Le Monstre et le Magicien in 1826.  Note that this is the real beginning of the Monster being portrayed using “greenface.”
