An walk to Remember: Trekking along the rail lines between Sakleshpur and Mangalore
Nothing beats the evergreen Western Ghats when you are into #trekking, plus a nature lover. When you think of #trekking you must be think hills, mountains or coastal trails. Well, it’s time to get yourself lined up for unprecedented surprises. The Sakleshpur Trek, more commonly called the #green-route #trek is a trek trail running along a railway track amidst the thick green forests of #sakleshpur.
It was around 4 am when I arrived at Donigal with a group of #trekkers, after a tedious bus ride from Bangalore to Donigal. We walked till Donigal Railway Station- that’s the start point of this unique trek trail. We started out at 5 am, and even though initially greenery couldn’t be spotted, as the sun rose, the beauty started unraveling. The trail takes you through tunnels, bridges, caves fabulous waterfalls along the way.
We completed the trek in 8 hours, walking along a 147 km long meter gauge railway line. The trail ends at Yedakumeri station and that’s 20 km away from Donigal Station. Post monsoon (ideally, September) is a great time to get your gear ready. Monsoon may be the best time but, surely you wouldn’t want leeches to such the blood out of this moderately difficult hike (literally)!
(Watch out for the cave bats & wild elephants in Sakleshpur-Gundya range!)
