CONCERT REVIEW: Greg Klyma

When people think of the historic Caffè Lena in Saratoga Springs, New York, what often comes to mind is the coffeehouse's history of fostering future greats: Bob Dylan, Ani DiFranco -- and that's just naming a few.  Attending Greg Klyma's album release on November 15th brought this legacy to mind.

15 years into a prolific career, Klyma is beginning to win the acclaim of folk's most prestigious reviewers, and for good reason. His latest fan-funded album -- Another Man's Treasure -- speaks eloquently to the heartbreak, loneliness, and wry humor that fill the life of a touring musician. Though Klyma doesn't claim to understand poetry, it is hard to classify his deft lyrics as anything else.

Klyma began the second set on the tenor banjo with "Circular World." Following that was "A Dream About You," my personal favorite song of the night. "A Dream About You" speaks of the longing for a dream about a beloved. With deeply poignant lyrics and a sad, slow, rolling melody, Klyma pulled the audience into his heart, and simultaneously spoke to longing in our hearts- this, for me, is the best of small venue experience. It was the sort of song that facilitates real communion between performer and audience.

Greg then took to the piano, performing an audience favorite, "Kale Store," an upbeat polka written for the folk-hero creator of those ubiquitous "Eat More Kale" stickers. We celebrated everyone's favorite green. We had all of the fun. The merriment continued to the encore, when Greg invited the audience to gather 'round the piano for the slow yet rocking "Livin' the Life." I left the show feeling like I had a friend in Greg Klyma.

Between his songs both merry and touching, Greg chatted with the audience, accentuating what is perhaps his best quality as a performer -- Greg possesses a sweet, witty and idiosyncratic personality that shines in his cheerful repertoire. Greg Klyma has great songs, a great show, and a great heart. Seeing Greg reminds us of why we support small time artists -- his integrity and lack of pretension was truly refreshing.
