I’m going to make some various post on Everhood theories (more ideas supported with various parts from the game, but could fully be stretches). Most are Green Mage based cause they stole my braincells. // WARNING FOR SPOILERS
PT 1. THE GREY MAGE & THE GREEN MAGE.
The grey hat has been implied and shown twice in the game- once in the cursed castle on the paintings, and second in Green’s playroom. While a Grey Mage isn’t mentioned (as far as I know, i haven’t gotten through new game+ fully yet) the hat implies the existence of one that is or used to be. I have my own concepts on such.
CONCEPT 1- A DEAD MAGE: The most simple concept is Grey Mage was another Mage- perhaps killed in the previous mass death that limited the game to the cast it has now, or died through some other means (unlikely if they were immortal given the basis of the game). Their connection to Green and why their hat is in their playroom could be just as simple too. An old friend, a mentor, anything like that. There isn’t much to say regarding this concept that isn’t already easy enough to come to on its own.
CONCEPT 2- THE EGO CHANGE: The far more interesting concept is if we take into account the note about the soul bound gems, specifically the part concerning the change of the ego.
A soulbound gem can change the ego itself, and if we are to take ego as what makes an individual themselves then there is a possibility of some very interesting concepts with this. Taken into account we don’t really see anything regarding the change of ego in its essence within the actual game, I think its more about picking apart the pieces. Beyond that, I wish to point out a part of the ‘doodle room’ at the end of greens corridor (i wont show the whole image. i’ll dissect parts over time however).
While some are hard to read (the first I’m having trouble fully deciphering, if anyone wants to hmu with what they think it is), the general basis is the focus of ego and change. The first message has ego circled and seems to say something along the lines of “ego cause to realization i can whenever...” which again I believe is wrong but ego, realization, and whenever (or whatever) are words within there. Then you have messages of discipline and a seemingly regretful message of ‘i did this to myself’.
Basically, all rambling aside, Green Mage could have been Grey Mage. While I have been told it could very well be a buckle, the object on the hat also looks like it could be an eye. Perhaps an attempt at gem use without soulbinding it, more in vein of the gems Gold Pig wears along their necklace. I imagine soulbinding requires it to be imbedded into the body, as it must replace a sense to work. The Green Mage could have been a more structured individual at one point, less self destructive and jovial. I’d like to believe so, given the trust given to them in holding onto a rather important artifact and the fact of discipline to tally down the years over eon and eon.
Somewhere along the way, Green decided to have the soulbound gem that is now their Eye, causing a change of ego and perhaps a personal choice to ‘become a new person’. I may delve more into this concept over time and go over more of what Grey may have been like and why the image of the hat is important within the castles pictures, but for now I’ll stop my rambling.
TLDR:: Green Mage and Grey Mage are connected either via an old friendship or Green Mage is Grey Mage.
