My partner and I are doing a fancy Jack and Tooth cosplay, of which I am sewing. This will be his first cosplay, and he is willing to dye his hair white for this. I don't quite know if this is a wise idea, he is a dark blond currently. I'm worried about color quality and more importantly, the health of his hair afterwards. I personally often cut and dye instead of opting for wigs in the five years I have under my belt (this will be my sixth), but I find it can cause a lot of damage. Advice?
P.S. I think it’s great that you created this blog!
thank you very much, first of all! personally, i favor wigs, as i often cosplay multiple characters in a given weekend. wigs have a lot of benefits, like being easier to style and cut (and if you mess up, you can always get another. cant do that for your own hair), and its often far easier to achieve the kind of gravity-defying and volume that you see in a cartoon. and, at the end of the day you can take it off and go back to your real hair!
the color quality i think will be fine since he has relatively light hair and thats easier to bleach, and if he only dyes once then in the scheme of things it wont matter much. but if he continues dyeing for multiple cosplays or continues to do jack for multiple cons then in the long run a wig will be a better investment. plus, if you pick out a nice one it will look pretty natural! you can just keep going back to the same wig, rather than re-dyeing and re-cutting to match the character.
if anyone has advice for this cosplayer, feel free to give your input!
