The #herons of #lochendpark are struggling to eat with the loch frozen over. I’ve been feeding them balls of 20% fat mince and the odd prawn. They seem desperately hungry. If you have some time and can spare about £2 for some meat scraps, chicken livers, pork mince. Toss small amounts out to them. They will appreciate it. We have named them all Irene, though there’s no way to tell their sex. Meet the #greyheron. This #apexpredator is a common sight at #lochendpark where it feeds on fish, frogs, eels, baby water birds and anything else it can stab with its giant faceknife. Some are quite tame and accept dog kibble. The GREY HERONS (Ardea cinerea) Do you know Grey herons are monogamous. They stay together for the breeding season, which extends from early February until May or early June. Each male will select a nest site at the beginning of the breeding season, most often in a tall tree. Females lay 1 to 10 eggs, laying every two days. Both parents incubate the eggs, for a period of 25-26 days. They take turns four times each day, after the same display. Chicks are fed by both parents, who look after them attentively, one of them staying at the nest for the first 20 days. Feeding is through regurgitation into the mouth.
